Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Shooters Gonna Shoot

Biola Men's Basketball runs up against a great shooting team and falls short.

AZUSA, Calif. --- It's tough to keep up with a great three-point shooting team that's having a great night. A great night may even be an understatement for what the Azusa Pacific Cougars were channeling Saturday night at the Felix Event Center.

Despite the Eagles playing a pretty well-disciplined game and getting contributions from the right spots, the hosting Azusa Pacific group rode its 16-for-34 three-point performance to an 87-66 Cornerstone Cup victory.

The numbers in the final score do not necessarily accurately reflect the type of game it was, as Biola managed to keep its intensity up for the full 40 minutes and gave APU trouble a few times throughout the night.

Almost all throughout, the Cougars took advantage of some friendly home rims. APU shot 53.4 percent overall, which was six points better than their season average.

Biola held a lead at two different points throughout the game. Early production by the upperclassmen led to an early 7-5 lead and then a stretch of sound three-point shooting of its own helped BU take a 30-28 lead.

That lead at 30-28 gave reason for great hope because it showed Biola had the ability to erase a double-digit APU lead. But BU could never extend itself a lead past a three-point advantage.

Just after the Marquise Mosley three-pointer that gave Biola its advantage Azusa Pacific chalked up 17 points over the next three minutes to take a 10-point lead into the halftime break.

That lead never got smaller than nine points over the course of the second half as the APU shooters turned up the heat, both from outside and from right underneath the basket.

The Cougars outscored Biola 42-31 in the second half, with a bunch of production on both ends by their talisman Selom Mawugbe. The big man had a couple of dunks and a few and-one plays to power a 25-point effort on 9-for-11 shooting. Not only that, but it was he who created so much space for the three-point specialists to do their jobs.

Leading the effort from deep was transfer PG Brennan Rymer. Rymer was 8-for-11 from beyond the arc and would finish with 24 points. He was also the member of the Cougars' roster who played most to the large crowd and made it tough for BU to communicate with consistency.

Jesse Elrod was the Eagles' leading scorer. He had 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting. He also led BU with six boards.

Biola trailed in the rebounding battle and was blocked four times as the athleticism of APU shone through from start to finish.

Biola falls to  10-7 and 6-5 in PacWest Conference play following the loss. APU wins their ninth in a row to keep itself just one half-game back from Point Loma for the conference lead. The two teams meet again inside of Chase Gym in two weeks on Feb. 1.

In the meantime, the Eagles host a pair of Northern California PacWest Conference opponents next week. Notre Dame de Namur comes to town on Thursday night, while the Eagles host Dominican on Saturday afternoon.
