Attacking Out The Gates

Biola Men’s Soccer showed some promising aggressiveness early but ultimately lost to Point Loma on the road.

SAN DIEGO --- Biola Men's Soccer wasted no time settling into the new season, as the Eagles opened the 2019 campaign with a non-conference fixture at Point Loma on Thursday.

Head Coach Todd Elkins' group took the first seven shots of the match against the Sea Lions and carried a 9-to-4 advantage in attempts headed into the break. But Point Loma snuck a goal into nine minutes before halftime with a cross in front of the net to ultimately earn the victory.

The Eagles start the season 0-1 but take no blemishes on their PacWest record because of the match's non-conference designation. David Achaerandio's goal in the 38th minute is his first game-winner of the year and his first with PLNU after transferring in.

Aggressive is just about the best word to describe Biola during the opening sequences of the match. The tension increased rather early as the Eagles asked the referee why fouls weren't being called for them on certain plays. But that tension only seemed to feed Biola's drive while the Sea Lions were the ones having to get accustomed to the atmosphere.

Unfortunately, the Eagles' aggressiveness also resulted in 10 whistles during the opening half (nine fouls and an offsides) compared to Point Loma's four fouls and four offsides over the same span and it was Biola's offsides that immediately preceded the Sea Lions' goal. Point Loma got on the board first by working down the right sideline and crossing toward the middle where Achaerandio was able to put it away.

Coach Elkins made several personnel adjustments in the second half as Biola leans into its depth as an asset. In addition to freshmen Dylan Memory and Chad Sincliar starting the match, five other newcomers to the 2019 roster saw at least 15 minutes of action and averaged around 30. Then Hunter Finnegan made a transition from the number nine forward position to centerback in the second half and had a big hand in locking down the defensive third and limiting the Sea Lions to one late shot on goal in the second half.

Freshman Alex Lugo forced the Point Loma keeper to make a diving save nine minutes into the second half with a chance from 25 yards out. But Point Loma wouldn't allow the Eagles another true scoring opportunity until the last second of the match. Jack Kilgallon made a great run to chase down a booted ball from JD Gunn and was fouled about 30 yards away from goal. Leo Thompson set over the ball to take a direct shot at the equalizer. But the shot was deflected by the wall of Point Loma defenders to keep the clean sheet.

The Eagles return to Al Barbour Field for their home opener on Saturday and will play another afternoon match. Biola hosts Northwest Nazarene at 1 p.m.
