Weekly Notes for Men's Soccer September 15 to 21

Countdown To Conference Play

Biola Men’s Soccer plays the final two non-PacWest opponents in its schedule this week.

September 17, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After earning their first win of the year against Cal State San Marcos and really giving UC San Diego a run for their money last week, the Biola Eagles will look to build on their recent success with their last two matches against non-PacWest opponents: Wednesday at home against Cal State Dominguez Hills and Saturday against No. 7 Cal State LA.

The Eagles come into the week with a number of good things cooking on the offensive front. Five student-athletes have now found the back of the net for Head Coach Todd Elkins group after three men found the net for the first time last week. Among them are Dylan Memory, the midfielder who scored what would be the game-winning goal in Biola's 2-0 shutout of Cal State San Marcos and earned PacWest Freshman of the Week honors this past Monday, and last year's leading goal-scorer Leo Thompson, who scored the first goal UC San Diego had conceded all season.

That spread in scoring is a product of the Eagles' success and resilience in the battle for possession during the middle parts of the match. Biola's opponent held the advantage of possession during both of the Eagles' matches this week, but BU's backline prevented CSUSM from taking any clean shots at goal and Elkins' elected to keep Hunter Finnegan at defender for the whole match on Saturday to try to limit the Tritons' attack for as long as the Eagles could. Look for a similar dependance on defense to set up offense this week as Biola bides it time to find opportunistic strikes.

BIOLA (1-3) vs Cal State Dominguez Hills (1-3): Wednesday, Sep. 18 at 7 p.m.\\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
Cal State Dominguez Hills comes to Al Barbour Field with an unblemished 7-0-1 record against the Biola Eagles, with these teams last meeting in October 1993. This iteration of the Toros is under the direction of first-year Head Coach Eddie Soto and was picked 7th in the CCAA Preseason Poll last month after going 4-13-1 in 2018 with a 1-8 record on the road. Cal State Dominguez Hills is 1-3 early on in the 2019 campaign with two losses against PacWest opponents and just three goals scored compared to eight goals against. Biola will still need to be careful because the Toros are coming off a 1-0 win In Washington at Saint Martin's this past Saturday and have come up just one goal short in each of their last two losses. CSUDH tied Point Loma in the second half before the Sea Lions pulled away again for a 2-1 win and took No. 23 Simon Fraser to overtime before conceding a golden goal.

BIOLA (1-3) at No. 7 Cal State LA (4-0) : Saturday Sep. 21 at 7 p.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Cal State LA does not offer live video for this match
Cal State LA is the newly minted No. 7-ranked team in the nation after taking two road victories against PacWest opponents, 2-1 at Fresno Pacific and 3-0 at Notre Dame de Namur. The early 4-0 record is just what was expected of a Golden Eagles team that was picked as the preseason favorite in the CCAA after Cal State LA won back-to-back conference tournament titles and returned seven All-CCAA student-athletes to its 2019 roster. The Golden Eagles have three men who have scored multiple goals this season, including German midfielder Tim Klefisch, who was an All-American selection last year.

Cal State LA charges $8 for admission to soccer matches and takes cash at the gate for tickets. The match will be played at University Stadium/Jesse Owens Track & Field.
