A Night To Remember

Biola earns its first victory of the year behind two goals and a clean sheet from freshman.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles felt right at home under the lights on Wednesday, playing their first night match of the 2019 season at Al Barbour Field. Even with four freshmen in Head Coach Todd Elins' starting XI, the Eagles pushed their way into control and into the lead in their match with the Cal State San Marcos Cougars, winning 2-0.

Biola earned its first victory of the year behind goals from two freshman, Dylan Memory and Owen Setran, and a clean sheet from redshirt freshman JD Gunn. The defending PacWest Freshman of the Week made five saves in the match to shutout a Cougars side that defeated then-No. 25 Fresno Pacific 3-0 and that scored an equalizer at No. 11 APU in the 70th minute last week.

The teams came in with identical 3-3-3 records over their previous nine meetings and the match played very even over the first 45 minutes. Cal State San Marcos had a 7-to-2 advantage in shots in the first half, but the Eagles went into the locker room with 51 percent of the possession and a 1-0 lead thanks to a pretty combination between Jack MacDonald and Dylan Memory.

With just under two minutes left until halftime, MacDonald chested the ball into open space right in the middle of the penalty area for Memory to pounce on it quickly and drill it past the CSUSM keeper. Memory's goal would turn into the first game-winner of his collegiate career and gave Biola the first goal of the day for the second-straight match.

The Cougars continued their aggressive style in the second half with eight more shots but the Eagles countered by looking for quality chances that would help them increase their lead. That opening would come relatively quickly as the midfield found a running lane down the right sideline for Hunter Finnegan just about eight minutes into the half.

Finnegan continued the run all the way to the endline and looped the ball across the box for Chad Sinclair to push it into the area where Setran was waiting. The freshman matched Memory with another missle that notched the first goal of his career and immediately raced toward his bench for a scrum with his teammates.

Biola's defense was uncompromising following those two goals. The backline held the Cougars to two corners and limited the Cougars' shots on goal to attempts right at the center of the goal-mouth and easy for Gunn to handle. Biola is now 4-5-3 against Cal State San Marcos all time and breaks a two-match losing streak.

The Eagles will head back out on the road this weekend with a matchup against UC San Diego on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
