Seniors Shine On Final Day

Biola’s senior class was at the center of the key moments during Friday’s doubleheader against Hawaii Hilo.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Friday's conclusion to the regular season at Eagles Diamond was focused on Biola's senior class from the start of the Senior Day Ceremony to the finish of the series finale with Hawaii Hilo.

The coaching staff and the rest of the roster honored the Eagles' six seniors before the game with pictures frames and recordings of good memories. Then the graduating class got right to work in helping Biola win the series against the Vulcans with a 2-1 win in the final game of the series.

Head Coach Justin Duarte's group took a 3-1 lead in game one before Hawaii Hilo came back with four runs in the fourth. The Eagles tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on Jerron Largusa's single that drove in Joey Magro for Largusa's 42nd RBI of the year. Then senior DH Zach Labounty made the most of his first start of the year by doubling down the left field line to collect his first RBI in a Biola uniform and put the Eagles up 2-1.

After the Vulcans pushed back to make the game 5-3, the home team knotted the game back up in the seventh with two runs from the top of the order. Magro started the game with three walks against Travis Burleson but changed course in the seventh by unloading on a belt-high fastball for his five homerun of the year. Jackson Collins followed up with a solid single up the middle that scored Connor Kostecka to tie the game at 5-5 briefly until Hilo scored a sixth run in the next half inning.

All of Biola's first four hitters reached based safely at least twice in the 6-5 loss. Magro scored twice while Kostecka had his second three-hit game in a row to push his batting average over .300 just before season's end. Kostecka was 0-for-1 with two hit-by-pitches in the series finale to finish the regular season as the Eagles' fourth .300-hitter at .301 in his sophomore campaign.

Largusa collected two hits in game one and added another in game two to finish the season with Biola's top batting average at .343 and with the most RBI's at 43. Largusa finished the regular season with more extra-base hits, runs scored, RBI's and homeruns than he did in 2018 when he was a second-team All-PacWest selection. And Jackson Collins solidified his own case for all-conference selection with a .339 batting average and 34 RBI's after his single and double Friday.

Game two belonged primarily to Dallas Burk with a little help from Magro and Largusa. The senior leaders drove in the only two runs of the game for Biola in the third, with Largusa plating Magro for what would be the game-winning run.

Magro would go 7-for-13 with two homeruns and six RBI's in his final series at his home ballpark. He also scored seven time to finish second in runs scored (36) and second in RBI's (34) for the Eagles this season.

Those two runs ended up being all Burk needed, as the lefty pitched the longest start of his career at Biola for the complete-game victory. Burk ended the game by retiring the last eight batters in a row and had five innings in which he threw 10 pitches or less. The southpaw didn't even need as strikeout as he got 13 groundouts, six flyouts and an outfield assist from Andy Van Antwerp that threw a runner out at the plate to limit the Vulcans to one run.

The Eagles conclude the regular season having won each of their last three seasons at home with a 19-7 record at Eagles Diamond. They'll have a number of players up for All-PacWest selections. But until then, Biola will wait to see if it can squeeze into third place in the conference standings to qualify for NCCAA playoffs.
