Lights Out

Paige Austin repeatedly strands APU runners on base in eight-inning shutout win.

AZUSA, Calif. --- Paige Austin needed less than 100 pitches to throw a complete game, eight-inning shutout over the Azusa Pacific Cougars lifting Biola to a 1-0 win on the road.

It's just Biola's third time beating APU since 2011 and came in an absolute barn-burner. Both teams had their chances throughout regulation, with Austin and the Eagles dealing with four different APU runners reaching third base.

The tension was its biggest in the later innings as the home team got a runner to third in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Austin was well prepared to face those difficult situations, having already wiggled out of a bases loaded, no out situation in APU's second inning.

She got a groundout to end the fifth and strikeouts to end the sixth and seventh innings and give Biola a chance to pull ahead in extra innings.

The Eagles managed three hits off APU's Kat Ung throughout regulation innings, but could not get much going in terms of pushing runners around to scoring position. That changed as soon as the game moved into its extra frame.

After a hard-hit lineout began the 8th with a play that went in favor of APU Ruth Munoz and Areana Ramos drew back-to-back walks to setup a scoring chance. Senior first baseman Missy Poti watched a ball to begin her at-bat and then hit one hard on the ground through the right side to bring home Munoz with what would be the game's winning run.

Biola then had two runners on and just one out and were looking to expand upon its one-run lead. A strikeout and groundout got the Cougars out of it with limited damage.

Austin would set down APU in order in the bottom of the eighth, getting a popup, strikeout and line out to end the game. It's the sophomore's seventh shutout of the season. She struck out 10 batters (for the second-straight game) and allowed just one hit and two walks.

All four of Biola's hits came from seniors, who are playing in their final regular season series on Thursday. Hailey Boyett had two, Andi Hormel one and Missy Poti had the game-winner.

With the win Biola improves to 24-15 and 19-10 in PacWest Conference play. APU falls to 21-11 in conference play, making the final game of the doubleheader all that more important.

The second game of the day's doubleheader is scheduled for a 6:35 p.m. start time.
