We Need More Cowbell

Biola’s three homeruns push it to a 7-3 win over Hawaii Hilo on cowbell giveaway day at Eagles Diamond.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- With the Biola SGA-sponsored noise-makers given away at the entrance to Eagles Diamond on Wednesday, the Biola Eagles had all the cowbell they needed to win the first of a four-game non-conference series with Hawaii Hilo behind three crucial homeruns.

The Eagles improve to 4-1 on the year against the Vulcans and are 17-6 overall at home while Hawaii Hilo loses for the second time in its last 17 contests.

The Vulcans were actually the team to take the initial lead with two runs in the second and one in the third against starter Josh Ludeman. But Joey Magro quickly put an end to the visitors' lead with a three-run homerun in the bottom of the third inning on a hanging offspeed pitch from Jacob Morales to start the at-bat.

It was Magro's fourth homerun of the year and put him on his way to four RBI's on the day for a total of 32. The homerun also allowed Ludeman to get back into the game on the mound and finish off a good outing in an unconventional role for the junior right-hander. Ludeman threw his longest outing of the year with five innings of three-run ball on 77 pitches for the no decision.

He struckout three and stranded seven Vulcans on-base during his start to start a string of six-straight innings Hawaii Hilo went scoreless to conclude the game.

The Eagles' bats finally woke up again in the bottom of the seventh, as a leadoff double from Jerron Largusa was plated by an RBI single from RJ Bates to take the lead. Magro gave Biola insurance with a sacrifice fly that made it 5-3. But RobertAnthony Cruz and Jerron Largusa decided to break the game open with back-to-back homeruns in the next two at-bats to push the score to its final resting place of 7-3.

Biola collected six extra-base hits on Wednesday, marking the ninth time Head Coach Justin Duarte's group has recorded five or more XBH's in a game this year. Four Eagles also had multi-hit games and Magro lead that charge with a 2-for-2 line score with a walk and an HBP.

Jackson Collins wasn't far behind Magro with two hits and a walk. But the defending PacWest Player of the Week's day was still significant as it pushed him above Academy of Art's Thomas Delgadillo for the best on-base percentage in the PacWest at .486.

The Eagles' bullpen was nails to close out the team's 27th win of the season. Joey Leavitt earned his first win of the year after a hitless sixth and tossing an inning-ending double play in the seventh. Honus Kindirech stranded the bases loaded in the eighth when it was still a one-run game and now has six outings at Eagles Diamond this year where he hasn't allowed an earned run. Then Brayden Englert finished out the game in the ninth with a fastball that sat at 89 miles-per-hour and recorded two strikeouts.

The two teams will return to Eagles Diamond Thursday for the second game of the series. And the Eagles are hoping for a little more luck as cowbells will be given away on Thursday as well.
