APU Stings Eagles In Second

Biola allows APU six early runs and never recovers.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A rocky start turned into a sour finish in game two of Biola's Saturday doubleheader with Azusa Pacific as the visiting Cougars turned in six runs in the first three innings and ended up winning the game 9-2.

The lopsided game two gave APU the doubleheader sweep after the visitors barely had the upper hand in the 1-0 first game of the day. It's the second season in a row where the APU pitchers kept Biola bamboozled in the first meeting of the season.

Last year the Eagles managed just one run in the first two games, this year it went up to two but still resulted in two unfortunate losses.

Biola managed just four hits in the nightcap, and committed four errors in the field to play a large part in the lopsided score line.

Aside from a three-run first inning and three-run third inning Biola pitching did fairly well to keep the Azusa Pacific hitter neutralized, but the Cougars still managed 11 total hits and a laser beam homerun in the top of the seventh to expand the lead.

Biola also saw a homerun in this game as Kylie Velasco pinch hit for Madison Blossey in the sixth and quickly left the yard off APU starter Racqual Espinoza. The Eagles scored one in the fifth and one in the sixth after being no-hit through most of the first four innings.

Sicili Brittingham and Missy Poti accounted for the other of Biola's two runs. Brittingham hit a two-out double to start a rally in the sixth and then Poti hit a double right after her to drive her home.

Andi Hormel had the fourth of the Eagles' hits. The senior had more hits than any other Eagle on the afternoon as the only one to hit safely in both contests.

The two losses muddy the PacWest picture a little bit for this Eagles team that's still hoping for a top-3 finish to punch its ticket to Virginia for the NCCAA National Championship. Biola sits at 16-12 overall and 11-7 in conference. They're fifth in conference winning percentage but second in the loss column (not counting ART U who's played just nine PacWest games).

The Eagles have nine days off before they hit the road to Northern California to play eight games in four days from April 16-20. After that trip they'll have just four regular season contests left.
