Biola Brought Its Bats

The Eagles score eight and win a game by run-rule in road trip opener.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- Near-perfect pitching and bats that seemingly could not miss made a powerful combination for Biola in game one Tuesday at Dominican. The Eagles poured on eight runs on 11 hits to shutout the Penguins in a run-rule shortened 8-0 victory.

Kayla Neff and Areana Ramos had three hits a piece to pace the Biola offense. Madison Blossey hit her first collegiate homerun and Paige Austin struck out 10 Penguins to highlight a terrific start to the road trip for the Eagles.

The scoring began in the top of the first when Hailey Boyett walked, was moved to third by a Ramos double and came around to score on a Missy Poti sacrifice fly. That run would be all the Eagles would need to win, but certainly was not all they'd go on to get.

Austin was tremendous, inducing 20+ swings and misses and limiting Dominican to just three base runners (one hit) to pick up her seventh win of the season. Of her five innings, she had three innings where she faced the minimum, four where she struck out at least two and two where she struck out the side.

"Paige coming out so good was great," said Head Coach Nikki Udria. "Especially with a long week it was good we didn't need to go the extra couple innings."

Even with a lead and Austin mowing down hitters, Udria still didn't think the team was producing as much as it was capable and rallied the troops for a re-focusing talk after the second inning.

"Our offense was good. I was proud of the way they made an adjustment," said Udria. "Right before the third inning we made some adjustments because we weren't quite executing our game plan early on."

Whatever adjustments they made sure did work.

The third and fourth innings were the biggest offensive efforts from BU. Biola piled on three in the third inning, thanks to a two-RBI double from Ramos and another sacrifice fly from Poti. The sacrifice fly was made possible by some aggressive base running by Ramos that saw her advance to third on the throw from the outfield after her double. She was also aggressive in scoring on the sacrifice, beating out the throw with a good slide at home plate.

Biola's two runs in the next inning came courtesy an early solo shot from Blossey and a later double steal that allowed Neff to score after the catcher threw to second base to try and catch Ramos.

The Eagles couldn't get the game to run-rule range in their half of the fifth inning, but got the job done in the top of the sixth. A Ruth Munoz bunt single led-off the frame. Munoz came into play shortstop as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the fifth. It's her first game action since March 20. She would come around to score the game's seventh run when Ramos drove her and Neff in with yet another two-RBI double.

Kaile Chavez came out to the circle for the bottom of the sixth and locked the game down with a 1-2-3 frame.

The win moves Biola to 17-12 overall and 12-7 in conference play. The Eagles and Penguins have one more game on Tuesday, scheduled for a 2:25 p.m. first pitch. They'll play twice more on Wednesday.
