Biola Men’s Tennis pushes Point Loma again before falling 4-1 at the Biola Tennis Center

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis got their second look at the Point Loma Sea Lions on Saturday and proved that the Eagles would only need a few breaks at the PacWest Tennis Championships in two weeks to steal a win from PLNU.

The Eagles took a point in singles with Derek James earning his second win of the season over Tim Soderman and had tiebreakers on three other courts in their comeback attempt. But the Sea Lions held on for three straight-set victories to win the dual match 4-1.

Biola took its first swipe at the Sea Lions with a victory at No. 3 doubles from Edwyn Ramos and David Garcia that made the No. 2 flight the rubber match. The 6-3 win for the Ramos/Garcia duo was their second-straight doubles win and pushes their record together to 7-3 on the year.

Unfortunately, Point Loma closed out the first point of the match by taking a 6-3 win of their own at No. 2 doubles to put the Eagles at a deficit. James' big 6-0, 6-4 win at the No. 3 temporarily tied the match at one point apiece and marked an improvement over James' last victory over Soderman in March. James dropped two fewer games in Saturday win than he did the first time around against his singles counterpart and now has 11 singles victories this season.

Head Coach David Goodman's group also took a set on courts two and five. But they just came a bit late to influence the overall momentum of the dual match. Logan Blair won his first set at No. 2, 6-4, and was primed to start his third set with Yuki Okamoto before the match was called. Andres Meneses also rallied in his match and overcame a 1-6 loss in the first set to win his second set with a 9-7 result in the second-set tiebreaker.

Meneses was winning 2-0 in his third set before the teams walked off, so the Eagles should be pretty confident that they can clip the Sea Lions at the PacWest Championships with another doubles win or two singles wins they haven't grabbed against Point Loma previously.

The championships will be held in Surprise, Arizona beginning on April 17. But the Eagles will squeeze in one more road contest before then, playing at Westmont on April 11.
