Sweet Victory In Santa Barbara

Biola Men’s Tennis beat Westmont College for the first time in the over 12 years.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles reversed 12 years of history with one mighty blow in Santa Barbara on Thursday, obliterating the Westmont Warriors in the singles play to open the dual match on the way to a 7-2 victory on the road.

The win is the Eagles' first in Santa Barbara and the first time Biola has beaten Westmont since the Eagles' men's tennis program joined the Warriors in the Golden State Athletic Conference way back in 2007. The Warriors had won 24-straight matches between the two teams coming into Thursday, including a meeting last year at Biola. But Head Coach David Goodman's group put another feather in their cap today with the big win.

The matchup started with singles play to accommodate for the women's match that followed and the switch to the normal course of play had no ill effects on Biola whatsoever. David Garcia and Derek James earned straight-set victories back-to-back to pick up the first two points for Biola followed shortly after by two more wins from Andres Meneses and Quentin Lau to bring the Eagles within one point of clinching.

James and Meneses both earned 6-0 set wins during their match while Lau wrapped up his third singles win of the year with a 7-2 result in his second set tiebreaker. James ended up dropping just two games total in his matchup with Corey Stephens while Garcia surrendered just four games in his 6-3, 6-1 win.

With the latter four singles results all settled in Biola's favor, attention turned to the No. 1 and 2 courts where Edwyn Ramos and Logan Blair played like there was pride on the line. Ramos gutted out a 7-5 victory in his first-set tiebreaker and gets the satisfaction on earning the clinching point in Biola's victory after closing strong in the second set with a 6-3 score.

But then Blair really made it a statement victory by roaring back in the third set with a 6-0 win that completed the Eagles' sweep in singles. Blair now has a three-winning streak after beating Jordan Strandness 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 and picked up his second-straight win in matches that have gone to three sets.

Westmont ended up winning two of the doubles matches, but the Eagles still had reason for optimism with Ian Nieh's return to action in winning fashion. He and Andres Meneses won the No. 3 doubles flight 8-6 to wrap up the match and grab Biola's seventh point. Nieh is now 3-1 on the year in doubles and 2-0 in his pairings with Meneses.

The Eagles will have Friday to prepare for their last regular season match of the year. Biola will host another former GSAC peer in Arizona Christian on Saturday at 2 p.m.
