The Starters Were Stellar

Kenny Carrillo and Larson Kindreich each pitched complete games on Saturday as Biola split the series with Concordia.

IRVINE, Calif. --- There were a few fireworks for the Biola Eagles on Saturday. Sophomore first baseman Jackson Collins went 3-for-3 with two homeruns in the game two win and the Eagles had three other extra-base hits on their final day of PacWest play.

But the most impressive thing about Saturday was the silence from the Concordia batters that was caused by the stellar pitching from starters Kenny Carrillo and Larson Kindreich. The duo combined for 16 strikeouts and zero earned runs as they both tossed complete games in Irvine. Carrillo came on some tough luck as his offense was unable to give him any run support. But he still posted his third quality start in his last four appearances, all coming against conference opponents.

Carrillo lowered his ERA by almost half a run after Saturday's start and recorded at least five strikeouts in a start for the fourth time this season. Carrillo faned seven Concordia Eagles and never allowed a runner to advance beyond second base outside of CUI's unearned run in the seventh. The Montebello, California-native induced a lot of weak contact with 10 flyouts and only allowed five total hits.

He now has the third best ERA on the team at 3.61 and recorded the Eagles' first complete game since Brayden Englert went nine innings at Hawaii Hilo on March 2. But the long outing is a definite trend now for Carrillo anyway, as he's thrown 27 innings over his last four appearances alone after pitching about 20 innings over his previous seven appearances.

The Eagles' best chances to score for Carrillo came in the third when Connor Kostecka and Andrew Buglino executed a double steal with two out and in the eighth when RobertAnthony Cruz doubled with two out. But Concordia was able to wriggle out of both times and shut the Eagles out for the first time since February 25.

The scoring drought didn't last long though, as Jackson Collins continued his hot hitting with a solo homerun to begin the second inning on game two. After collecting another multi-hit game in the opener Saturday, Collins launched another homerun the very next inning to plate a double from Jerron Largusa and put Biola up 4-0. The sophomore would drive in four runs in the win and reach safely all four times he came to the plate in the finale to conclude a great week.

Collins will head into the final series of the season as Biola's leading hitter for batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and homeruns after hitting .500 in 16 at-bats this weekend with four extra-base hits and eight RBI's.

Anj Bourgeois drove in the third run of the game for the Eagles by singling home Connor Kostecka in the second and Brandon Cody collected RBI's number 28 and 29 on the season with two run-scoring hits. Cody had three multi-hit games on the weekend and raised his batting average by 17 points in the process.

But the thing that really assured the Eagles of a series split and a winning PacWest record this season was Kindreich's dominance on the hill. The freshman fire-baller struckout nine and allowed just one hit in his shutout victory. He retired 16-straight batters from the second inning to the seventh and only had the streak break with a hit-by-pitch in the seventh with one out.

Kindreich ended the start by striking out the side and needed just 88 pitches to mow down the Concordia batters. He now has 19 strikeouts combined over his last two starts and is fourth overall in the PacWest with 67 punchies.

Biola ends its conference schedule with a winning record (17-15) for the second-straight season after the win. The Eagles will also try to reach the 30-win threshold for the fourth-consecutive year with Hawaii Hilo coming to Eagles Diamond for a non-conference series next week.
