It Comes Down To This

Biola Baseball still has its NCCAA playoff hopes alive going into the final conference series of the season.

April 25, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- By muscling their way to a series victory against Hawaii Pacific, the Biola Eagles kept their postseason hopes alive going into the final conference weekend of the season. Head Coach Justin Duarte's group out hit a Sharks offense that came into the series scoring about seven runs per game by coming up with big homeruns in key moments during their three come-from behind wins. Sophomores Brandon Cody and RobertAnthony Cruz both hit grand slams when Biola was down in the early innings of game one and four. And senior Joey Magro launched his third homerun of the year in the fifth inning of a 2-2 ball game that ended up being the difference in a 5-3 victory. Biola's 14-game homerun streak may have ended a few weeks ago, but the roundtripper is still playing a big role for the Eagles: they've won the last five games during which they've hit at least one homerun.

The pitching staff also showed great stuff against the Sharks last week, with Honus Kindreich, Chris Despars and Josh Ludeman making key appearances over the four-game set. Left-handers Dallas Burk and Larson Kindreich also recorded a big number of strikeouts, with Burk setting a new season-high with five over his six inning win and Kindreich fanning 10 Sharks in just 4.2 innings of work. Biola will need everything to be clicking this weekend if they're going to reach the third-place finish required for qualification for the NCCAA playoffs. With Hawaii Hilo three games in front of the Eagles, Biola needs to go at least 3-1 at Concordia to tie the Vulcans for third place. Hawaii Hilo plays at Point Loma this weekend for UHH's final conference series of the year, and would need to go winless while Biola goes 3-1 for the Eagles to tie the Vulcans for third place. If Biola sweeps Concordia, that allows BU to stand one win from Hawaii Hilo this weekend. It's not out of the question that Hawaii Hilo could lose three or four this weekend, as Point Loma has won all three four-game series its played in San Diego this year and is 14-6 overall at Carroll B. Land Stadium.
