Doubleheader Split With Sharks

Extra-base hits and great pitching pushed the Eagles to a win in game one before HPU came back to win game two.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The script of Friday's doubleheader between Hawaii Pacific and Biola was relatively straight-forward: the runs came for the teams that got extra-base hits. The Eagles pulled ahead in game one with a Joey Magro two-run homerun and then got insurance in the eighth after Jerron Largusa smashed a triple.

But Hawaii Pacific collected four doubles in game two while Biola only recorded singles to split the doubleheader with a 4-2 win.

The Eagles sit at 23-16 and 14-13 PacWest after the doubleheader. The win for Hawaii Pacific is the Sharks' first all-time in La Mirada and just their second victory of the year on the mainland.

Biola's game one starter, Dallas Burk, came up big in the moments his team needed him most on Friday, pitching six innings of three-run ball for his first win of the season. Burk successfully face the top four hitters in the Hawaii Pacific order four times to turn in his quality start, inducing a harmless fly ball from Christian Kapeliela to end the top of the sixth inning with a 4-3 lead.

Burk set a new season-high with five strikeouts and recorded 17 first-pitch strikes on the afternoon over the course of his 94 pitches.

Hawaii Pacific jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead on a triple from Jordan Mopas. But the Eagles even things up quickly with two runs in the third on a string of hits. After starter Tyler Van Stone got the first out of the inning, a Tyler Baca walk kicked off the first on four-straight hitters to reach safely to tie the game.

RobertAnthony Cruz drove in Baca for Biola's first run of the game with a single before Jackson Collins his a sacrifice fly to deep center that knotted the game up.

The Eagles tagged Van Stone for two more runs in the bottom of the fifth with two more runs on the Magro homer. The senior infielder now has 10 extra-base hits this season and took sole possession of second of the team in RBI's with 28. Largusa singled two batters later to chase Van Stone from the game after 4.1 innings and maintained his perfect start to the doubleheader.

Largusa was five for his first five on Friday and carries a six-game hitting streak into the finale on Saturday.

Biola closed out its win with two great innings of relief from Honus Kindreich and a second-consecutive save from Josh Ludeman to shut the door on the Sharks. After two innings of work on Friday, Kindreich hasn't allowed an earned run at Eagles Diamond over the 11.1 innings he's pitched there this season. Ludeman had a pedestrian one-two-three ninth on 13 pitches for his fifth save of the season. That's the third highest total among PacWest relievers.

In game two, the Eagles collected seven singles and pushed the tying run into scoring position with two outs in the final inning. But Biola couldn't get a comeback win for a third time in the series after HPU went up 3-0 in the third inning.

Head Coach Justin Duarte's made it a one-run game with two singles, a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Then the Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out walk from Magro and a frozen rope single from Cruz. But HPU's Grant Dragmire was able to get the final out of the game on a ground ball to strand the tying run is scoring position.

The series finale is scheduled for 12 noon at Eagles Diamond.
