Season-High Scoring Clinches Series

Biola piles on 11 runs to win Dominican series.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- Twenty minutes into Wednesday's opening game at Dominican it seemed as if Biola Softball was cruising to its most dominant win of the season. By the time the game got to the 40-minute mark (just one inning in) the home team was proving it had a bit of fight in it yet, making for a compelling game.

The Eagles scored seven in their half of the first inning, getting five runs across before the first out was even made. Biola had seven first-inning hits and forced the Dominican starter out of the game before she could retire one batter.

Then, the tide turned as Dominican compiled five hits of their own in the bottom half to pull back within two and prompt Biola to make an early pitching change of its own.

After that both teams relied on solid pitching out of their relievers to keep the scoring down from innings two through four. Kaile Chavez allowed one run in the second before registering back-to-back-to-back-to-back scoreless innings before she was taken it.

It was a masterful performance by the senior, who exited the game in the seventh with a lead in hand thanks to a four-run fifth inning from the Biola bats. Chavez' final line was five and two-thirds innings in relief, allowing just four hits and one run while dealing with 22 Dominican hitters.

She ended up getting the win thanks to Biola's six-hit, four-run effort in the fifth. That was a welcome sight after three really quiet offensive innings in the second, third and fourth.

The rally was sparked by a Missy Poti lead-off single. Immediately after touching the first-base bag Poti turned back to the dugout and fired her teammates up.

Next came a Hailey Boyett single and sacrifice bunt from Chavez to set Biola up with some important insurance runs on second and third with one out. Kylie Velasco, Kayla Neff and Areana Ramos all came through with RBI hits to extend Biola's advantage from 7-6 to 11-6 and go a long way towards sealing the game.

Paige Austin came into the game in the seventh as Head Coach Nikki Udria was not willing to chance anything in the opener. Austin allowed two base runners but no runs to lock the game down and put Biola up 3-0 in the series.

Chavez is awarded to win to improve to 2-0 this year. Each of the Eagles' one through four hitters put forth a multi-hit effort with Kayla Neff's three-hit performance leading the way. Ruth Munoz was slotted back into the no. 2 spot in the lineup and was solid all day, going 2-for-3 with a walk.

Seven different players scored for BU, helping the Eagles tie their season-best run total and score in double digits for the seventh time this year.

Biola improves to 19-12 (14-7 PacWest) with the win. Dominican falls to 7-26 (4-19 PacWest). The two teams conclude their season series with the second half of Wednesday's doubleheader, scheduled for a 2:55 p.m. start.
