SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- Game four was definitely the more nerve-racking of Biola's four-game sweep of Dominican, but at the end of the day the Eagles got the job done. The big effort for BU was a five-run sixth inning that gave Biola its first lead since the top of the first inning.
Â
Those five runs powered Biola to a 6-3 win over the Penguins and rewarded
Paige Austin for a workhorse performance across the complete game. It's the Eagles' first four-game sweep of the 2019 PacWest Conference season.
Â
Biola struck first with one run in the first inning, thanks to the number two, three and four batters all reaching base. The win helps Biola improve to 17-4 this season in games where it scores the first run.
Â
It was not an easy journey to victory by any means. Dominican scored twice in the bottom of the first to take their first lead of the entire series, and the Penguins did not want to let go.
Â
Some baserunning miscues led to Biola stranding two runners in the second, two in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth until runs finally came across in the sixth.
Â
Dominican had picked up an insurance run in the third that put even more pressure on the Eagles' offense that was down two and down to its final five outs.
Â
A one-out single from
Kylie Velasco sparked the rally in the sixth inning. Her hit was followed by a
Jennifer Morinishi double and an infield hit from
Andi Hormel that loaded the bases for
Kayla Neff.
Â
Neff would double to bring the game to a tied score with two outs still to work with. The go-ahead hit came off the bat of
Ruth Munoz and then seniors
Areana Ramos and
Missy Poti both drove in one more run to bring the score to 6-3.
Â
Austin went back out and kept the Penguins off the board in the sixth and seventh to earn her second win of the series. She threw just over 100 pitches and held Dominican to four hits in another impressive effort.
Â
Biola matched its game one effort with 15 hits in the nightcap. That gave the Eagles double-digit hit outings in all four games of the series. Ramos went 4-for-4 in the win while Velasco and Morinishi got three hits each to provide major production in spots seven and eight in the lineup.
Â
The Eagles improve to 20-12 (15-7 PacWest) with the series sweep. They continue play on this Northern California road trip with a pair of doubleheaders at Notre Dame de Namur (2-39, 2-26 PacWest) the next two days.
