11 Wins At Westmont

Biola gets 11 top marks in dual up in Santa Barbara.

April 13, 2019

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- For almost a decade the Golden State Athletic Conference Track & Field Conference championship came down to either Westmont or Biola. The two sides rekindled their rivalry for a casual dual meet up in Santa Barbara on Saturday.

The Warriors hosted BU and took wins in both dual meets. The women's matchup was a narrow 88-75 win for WC, with Westmont claiming a more sizeable advantage on the men's side, 134-29.

The teams competed a big slate of 38 total events with Biola getting first place in 11 of those.

Ten of those 11 wins came in individual events with Biola's women's 4x100m relay team being the only relay win of the day for BU. The group of Carissa Kalpakjian, Paige LaBare, Sarah Rossiter and Heidi Sowers won the event with a time of :48.56. That group is still in search (and in striking distance) of breaking the women's 4x100m record of :47.89 set back in 2015.

Out of the ten individual wins, Biola also managed six new season-best or career-best marks.

One of those season-bests came from Brady DeHaven in the 3,000m steeplechase. He won the event and was the only guy on the track to run sub-10:00. His time was 9:58.01.

Aaron Jackson also set a career-best in the triple jump as he went 14.04m to win the event. The best Westmont jumper was just 12.27m.

The other eight individual wins came on the women's side, which explains why the score was closer on that end. The Eagles swept the triple jump events with Hannah Hubbard leading the pack with a mark of 11.18m. Anna Maumalanga added another discus toss win to her career collection, making a mark of 40.66m.

Clara Haynes helped BU sweep both steeplechase events with a time of 11:46.28 and Paige LaBare found another win in the 100m with a :12.33.

Finally, four more women found wins and season or career-best times. Sarah Ann Frank was the quickest with a :14.84 mark in the 100m hurdles. She was followed by Shelby Rogers' :26.32 in a 200m win, Shannon Howell with a 2:16.96 in a sizeable victory in the 800m and finally a 10:38.74 from Micaela Pulliam in the 3,000m. Pulliam was one of the four Biolans to take spots 1-2-3-4 in that event.

Biola has its busiest week of the season coming as it competes Thursday through Saturday at the Mt. Sac Relays, Bryan Clay Invitational and Long Beach State Beach Invitational. It's the teams' final meet weekend before the PacWest Championships on April 26-27.
