Magro’s Magnificent Thursday

Joey Magro drove in four runs and provided the walk-off single of Biola’s 6-5 win over Academy of Art.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Eagles trailed the Academy of Art Urban Knights for eight innings on Thursday and didn't hit a homerun for the first time in 15 games but none of that mattered in the end because Biola defended home turf anyway.

Senior infielder Joey Magro collected three hits and drove in four runs in Biola's 6-5 victory in game one of the series and provided the most important hit with a single off the third baseman's glove that scored two runs for the win.

The victory is Biola's second walkoff win in a row after Connor Kostecka hit a two-run homerun versus Fresno Pacific last week and brings the Eagles within one game of a .500 record in PacWest play. They're also 11-4 at home after the win and have four wins this season when trailing after eight innings.

Both teams ended up scoring in patterns as the Urban Knights scored in every-other inning from the first to fifth while Biola scored one in the first, went three scoreless before adding two in the fifth, and went scoreless for three more innings before driving in three runs in the ninth.

Admittedly, the Eagles' offense wasn't as explosive as the Biola faithful has been used to seeing it on Thursday, so the solid pitching from Anthony Villegas and company was crucial to keep Biola in the game.

Villegas made his first start of the year on Thursday and only surrendered one walk in five innings to earn a no-decision. He created six groundouts over 76 pitches and got some help from Jerron Largusa on a diving catch in the six that started a double play and got the Eagles out of the inning in just six pitches.

That quick frame allowed Villegas to work through the fifth inning and hand the ball to Honus Kindreich, who had a great appearance at Eagles Diamond for the fourth time in a row. After allowing a single unearned run in 2.2 innings, Kindreich hasn't allowed an earned run at Eagles Diamond over his 9.1 innings there this season. Then Brayden Englert finished the game off with a little over an inning of relief and earned the win after stranding two men in scoring position across the eighth and ninth.

After Magro brought the Eagles within 4-3 with a two-run double in the fifth, Biola got the ball rolling again in the ninth by loading the bases with no outs. After an excellent bunt from Connor Kostecka and a quality plate appearance by Andrew Buglino that resulted in a sacrifice fly, Magro came to the plate with the bases loaded and attacked the first pitch he saw from Galen Manhard.

Magro lined a slider down the third-base line that was too hot for his counterpart to handle, allowing Andy Van Antwerp and Kostecka to score after the ball kareened toward the ART U bullpen and sending the team chasing after Magro to celebrate.

Magro and Buglino were the only two Eagles to collect multiple hit games on Thursday and the only batters to drive in runs for Biola. The Eagles will look to wake up the bats a bit more on Friday, when they play a doubleheader against the Urban Knights that starts at 12 noon.
