Loibl Climbs On Day Two

Biola’s second round team score was five strokes better than its effort on Monday while Jules Loibl’s solid play resulted in a 73 (+1).

ALAMEDA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles completed the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout on Tuesday with a two-round team score of 637 and two women in the top-50 of the 104-player field. Head Coach Jane Carr's group fought through inclement playing conditions to move up a spot in the field to 12th out of 19 teams while shaving five strokes off the team score from Monday's round with a 316 on Tuesday.

The Eagles finished ahead of two other PacWest program, including a Point Loma team that was six strokes behind Biola, and was just six strokes outside of the top-10. Cal State San Marcos won the tournament with a two-round score of 598. It was the only sub-600 score among the 19 teams.

"Today's conditions were rough with steady rain throughout the day and a 10-15 mph wind the final four holes of the tournament," said Head Coach Carr. "Despite the tough conditions, Jules Loibl fought back after yesterday's round of 81 to shoot a one-over par 73 today. I knew Jules would come back today even stronger than yesterday. She has an inner determination that keeps her fighting for low scores. Jules is one of those players that always believes she can go low and it was proven today by her two birdies, nine pars, and three bogey round."

Loibl's solid day moved her from a tie for 52nd place at the start of Tuesday to a team-best 18th place. This is the fourth-straight top-20 finish for Loibl while her second round score of 73 is her best single-round of the 2019 calendar year. She also shot a 71 on Oct. 9, 2018 at the ERAU Co-Ed Invite to finish in a tie for second with Tori Roeske.

Speaking of Roeske, the junior was one of three women (Sophia Karnazes and Sami Penor) who carded a +9 (81) for Biola on Tuesday after she picked up a birdie on the par-five 17 and was at even par through her first six holes. The Eagles recorded seven birdies as a team, with Loibl and Karnazes getting two each on the day.

Karnazes' work in particular drew Coach Carr's attention on Tuesday:

"I continue to be impressed with sophomore Sophia Karnazes. She followed up a first day 78 with a solid 81 today," said Carr. "I have always admired Sophia's tenacity on the course.  Starting on the par three 11th hole, she came out strong and fired off even-par in her first eight holes. Despite three doubles in the next five holes, Sophia continued to fight for pars. What I love about Sophia is that she never gives up. She knows how important every stroke is out there and has the ability to bounce back."

All six women competing for Biola finished in the top-86 of the individual leaderboard. Penor, Roeske, Rachel Reynolds and Marcel Manalo all proved incredibly consistent in the rain and wind and finished the second round with scores identical to or one stroke different from their marks in the first round. Manalo was designated as an individual player at the Shootout and finished in a tie for 62nd place, ranking her fifth out of the individual players at the tournament.

The Eagles will be back in action next week for the Augustana Spring Fling. The first round will take place on Thursday March 14.
