Garcia’s Big Stand

David Garcia clinches a 4-3 road win over Holy Names with a three-set victory at No. 5 singles.

OAKLAND, Calif. --- Something about wearing all-black for its matches has really dialed in Biola Men's Tennis over the past few weeks.

The Eagles were wearing an all-black uniform when they swept San Diego Christian at the Biola Tennis Center a few weeks ago and they were wearing it Monday when they came up with a big 4-3 road victory over Holy Names to start their Northern California trip.

Biola climbs back to .500 at 3-3 with the win and will travel to Rohnert Park for a rematch with Sonoma State on Tuesday.

Even in spite of a rain delay that pushed the match back two hours, the Eagles came out with sharp play in doubles to take the initial 1-0 lead. Edwyn Ramos and David Garcia got an early break in their doubles set and went on a roll to a 6-1 win for the first doubles result. Then Biola got its first clutch rally of the day at the No. 1 flight when Quentin Lau and Logan Blair held onto their break and won the deciding doubles fixture by a 6-4 score.

The Hawks responded with two straight-set victories at No. 2 and No. 6 singles to put the pressure back on Biola. But Head Coach David Goodman's group rallied together to give themselves the opportunity to win.

Derek James accelerated through the second set of his singles match with a 6-1 result that gave the Eagles their second point. Then Edwyn Ramos followed up a 6-4 win in the first set at No. 1 singles with by holding serve and getting a break at 5-5 in the second to turn the Eagles' attention to Garcia.
The senior captain pumped his fist through a second-set tiebreaker to win 8-6 and then capitalized on all the momentum in the third set with a bagel victory over Javier Luque.

Garcia is now 3-1 in singles this season and hasn't dropped a singles match since Feb. 7. James is now 3-0 in singles while Ramos picks up his first point at the No. 1 spot.

The Eagles' match with the Seawolves is scheduled to start at 12 noon.
