SAN FRANCISCO --- Biola Track & Field had an overnight road trip this week with a flight up north taking them to San Francisco State's Mike Fanelli Track Classic. The Eagles competed Thursday to Friday at the Chabot College track.

A school record, first-place finish, personal-bests and lots of top-10s highlighted a successful meet weekend by the bay.

Ryan Thompson and Angel Escobar were the story on Thursday night as both men beat the previous Biola school record in the 10k with times of 30:44.61 and 20:52.25, respectively.

"Ryan won his heat and Angel was third," said Head Coach Sean Henning. "I was very proud of how they competed down the home stretch, both of them negative split the race, meaning their second 5K was faster than their first."

The previous school record was set at 31:23.24 by two separate runners back in 1979 and 1985.

Micaela Pulliam paced the women's effort in that night's 10k, going 37:13.62 to set a new personal best and finish 34th overall.

"She went out a bit aggressive and had to run by herself for most of the second half of the race," said Henning. "She showed a lot of heart and determination though, and held on for a very solid finish and time."

The other notable from Thursday night was a fifth-place finish by Anna Maumalanga in the discus (39.76m). Maumalanga also competed on Friday and earned another top-20 finish, placing 16th in the shot put with a toss of 10.90m.

Paige LaBare had the best individual finish on Friday, taking first overall in the women's 100m with a :12.25. Her career-best is a :12.22. Two Eagles finished top-6 in that event as Sarah Rossiter set a college-best at :12.49 to place sixth.

"Sarah Rossiter ran a lifetime best in the 100 which was awesome to watch. She is an extremely hard worker so it was great to see it all pay off," said Henning.

Rossiter and LaBare were also a part of a Biola relay team that finished top-5 in the 4x100m relay. They were joined by Heidi Sowers and Carissa Kalpakjian to go :48.28 and place fourth. The men's team also had a top-5 relay on the day with the 4x400m team of Noah Strenn, Noah Styffe, Mathias Davis and Blake Kelly finishing fourth with a time of 3:24.93.

Davis and Strenn ran together in the men's 400m. Strenn ran his college-best time of :50.43 to finish 11th. Davis finished a hair faster at :50.41 to place 10th in the event.

"The men's 400 runners did great. Noah Strenn recorded a collegiate best and Blake Kelly ran a lifetime best," said Henning. "Them and Mathias ran very smart races and closed extremely well in the wind." 

Biola's best back-to-back finish of the event came when Nathaniel Belden and Corry Williams placed second and third in the 110m hurdles. Belden completed the course in :15.09 and Williams :15.64.

Hannah Hubbard and Rebeka Preston finished close together in a very strong triple jump effort for Biola. Hubbard set a career-best and finished second with a mark of 11.77m and Preston was fifth with a number of 11.35m. Hubbard's previous Biola-best was 11.13m.

The men also had a pair of solid finishes in the triple jump with Aaron Jacksom going 13.77m to finish fifth and J'Vaughan Singleton setting a season-best with a 13.33m seventh-place mark.

Other top-10 marks came from Singleton in the 110m hurdles (6th - :15.89m), Sarah Ann Frank in the 100m hurdles (7th -:15.21), Styffe in the 100m (6th - :11.03 - college-best) and Williams in the high jump (8th - 1.79m).

This event used to be known as the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, so naturally the distance events had massive fields throughout the week. Some highlights from distance include a Mackenna Mason personal-best in pacing Biola's effort in the 1,500m (56th - 4:45.98), Shannon Howell finishing just behind her in 60th (4:47.73) and a handful of positive results in the 5k.

"Mackenna Mason ran a lifetime best in the 1500, as did Siena Stacy. She also won her heat, dominating the last lap," said Henning.

Next week the team competes close to home at the April 6th Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
