Long Day In Azusa

Biola plays seven-and-a-half hours of baseball in a doubleheader but gets two tough losses against APU.

AZUSA, Calif. --- Friday's doubleheader with No. 13 Azusa Pacific had a little bit of everything for baseball fans. Eleven homeruns were hit in game one on the way to a combined run total of 37 runs for the two teams while game two was an extra-innings pitchers duel that was marked by a stellar pitching performance by Biola's Troy Stainbrook over 123 pitches.

Unfortunately, the Cougars came on out top of both contests are recorded 24-13 and 4-3 victories over the Biola Eagles in the first of two doubles for the 2019 Cornerstone Cup Series.

Azusa Pacific came out and showed why they are ranked No. 13 in the most recent NCAA Division II Baseball Poll by posting back-to-back seven-run innings in the third and fourth. But the Eagles hitters responded well and succeeded in chasing APU starter A.J. Woodall out of the game before the end of the fifth inning. Biola forced Azusa Pacific to dip into its bullpen frequently on Friday, as the Cougars' game two starter was also removed midway through the fifth of the 11-inning contest.

After A.J. Woodall exited the game having allowed four runs on nine hits, the Eagles scored nine more times and belted homeruns in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Brandon Cody hit a two-out grandslam to the opposite field on a first-pitch fastball and recorded two other hits to give him a team-best five RBI's in game one.

Ryan Gallegos left the yard for the first time since February 12 in the eighth and raised his batting average by almost 40 points in the contest with four hits in five at-bats. Then RJ Bates launched a heat-seeking linedrive in the ninth for three more runs that clanged off the scoreboard and tied him with Jackson Collins for a team-best five homeruns on the year.

Six Eagles would have multi-hit games in the first part of the doubleheader as Biola scored at least 13 runs for the fourth-straight game. Led by Cole Kleszcz' three homeruns in the game, APU hit eight roundtrippers to put this game in the PacWest recordbooks. The 11 homeruns hit in game one sets a new conference record for combined homeruns hit in one game and places the contest 12th all-time for most combined homeruns in NCAA DII baseball.

With the between-game break allowing the fatigue from a four-hour game to set it for the batters, game two quickly settled into a pitchers' duel that was carried by Biola's senior left-hander. Troy Stainbrook had a brief history of success under the Cougar Baseball Complex lights, having thrown six shutout innings there against Western Oregon in 2018, and continued that trend by shutting out the No. 13 Cougars for the first five innings of his start Friday.

Stainbrook allowed just two hits through his first five innings of work and was staked to a slim lead after Andrew Buglino hit a sacrifice fly that would have been a homerun at Eagles Diamond to score Joey Magro for a 1-0 advantage. But the Cougars chipped away with a run in the sixth to tie and two runs in the seventh to take the lead and push Biola on its heels.

But you have to give a lot of credit to the Visalia, California-native for his response when the Cougars started to push runs across. Stainbrook came back out for the bottom of the eighth inning and struckout the side to finish his outing with 11 strikeouts on 123 pitches. He also struckout cleanup hitter Joe Quire Jr. all three times he face Quire Jr. on the night while the top four hitters in APU's order went 2-for-19 in Stainbrook's game.

Troy's teammates picked him up in a big way after the eighth inning started with the Cougars leading 3-1. With one out, Brandon Cody and RobertAnthony Cruz tripled and homered on back-to-back pitches to immediately tie the game for Biola and push it into extras.

Anthony Villegas did admirably in relief of Stainbrook to keep the game scoreless against the top of APU's order in the ninth and 10th. But an interference call from the third-base umpire allowed the Cougars to have a runner at third base when Villegas looked in control with two outs and the runner was able to score on a tough ball up the middle.

The Eagles will return to the Cougar Baseball Complex on Saturday for another doubleheader that starts at 12 noon.
