Missy Magical In Walk-Off

Biola trails for almost the entire game but wins 5-4 on a Poti walk-off hit.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Monday's game one at Freedom Field proved how quickly things can change in the sport of softball. This we evidenced in a Chaminade three-run outburst early on and again in the final inning as Biola plated a pair to win 5-4 by way of a walk-off.

Both teams got great pitching performances throughout the game to keep the scoring relatively low compared to Biola's 11-run outburst in yesterday's game two. Chaminade's starter Madelyn Stockslager was especially effective, limiting Biola's lineup to just one run through the first five innings.

Chaminade controlled the game through those first five innings after scoring one in the first and three in the second off Biola starter Paula Damas. Damas was replaced by Jennifer Morinishi who came up with some big pitches to keep CUH in check over the last five innings, putting up all goose eggs.

The Silverswords offense was threatening all game long, getting runners into scoring position in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh but Morinishi and the BU defense wiggled out of trouble all game long - which proved to be crucial in the later innings.

Biola's first run came across in the bottom of the fourth inning when Sicili Brittingham singled to drive in Kayla Neff. The Eagles seemed primed to push more across that inning with the bases loaded and just one out, but Stockslager managed a strikeout and groundout to end the inning with CUH still in the driver's seat with a 4-1 lead and a bunch of confidence.

Biola would go down quietly in the fifth but got back to work in the sixth forcing two runs across to make it a one-run ballgame headed into the final frame. Both of the sixth inning runs scored on a Madison Blossey infield single. Brittingham brought the second run across with some heads up baserunning, scoring on a throwing error.

Chaminade got a potential insurance run all the way to third in their half of the third inning, but Morinishi induced an inning-ending groundout to third base to keep Biola within arm's length of a walk-off win.

When Andi Hormel led off the inning by getting plunked and then stole second base the energy really began to pick up in the Eagles' dugout and all around the diamond as you could feel momentum sliding in BU's favor.

A Hailey Boyett single to shortstop gave Biola runners on the corners and just one out in the inning and really set BU up well to at least tie the game. A groundball gave Chaminade a chance to end the game with a double play, but Areana Ramos was just a step faster than the throw from the second base bag to keep the inning alive with runners still on the corners and two outs now.

Ramos stole second to setup Sicili Brittingham for a potential game-winning hit if she could find a gap. Instead, Brittingham worked a full count and then a walk to load the bases for BU's third baseman Missy Poti.

Poti went down 1-2 and had to find composure quickly after sending a ball about two inches foul down the third base line to earn that second strike. Right after feeling as if she had won the game for her team Poti pounced on the very next pitch and found the gap in right-center field to actually win the game for the Eagles as Hormel and Ramos touched the plate.
The win helped Biola take a 3-0 advantage in the series and move to 15-10 overall and 10-5 in PacWest Conference play. The tough-luck loss for Stockslager and Chaminade saw the Silverswords fall to 10-22 (7-18 PacWest).

The series finale is set for a 6:30 p.m. start on Tuesday night. The game will be streamed live at portal.stretchinternet.com/biola.
