Eagles Erupt For 29 Runs

The Eagles earn a sweep of Saint Katherine with 29 runs in Saturday’s doubleheader.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For a short period of time at the beginning of game one during Saturday's doubleheader the atmosphere at Eagles Diamond had shifted from the loose feeling after Biola's 13-0 win over Saint Katherine on Friday.

The Firebirds played with a figurative fire in their belly in their first at-bats Saturday, taking advantage of a few miscues from the Eagles and hustling their way to two runs before Biola responded with three in the bottom of the first. And after a scoreless second inning it seemed like the Eagles Diamond faithful may be in for two tight games to conclude the series.

But then Head Coach Justin Duarte's group erupted with a eight-run third inning in game one that was sparked by a three-run homerun by Tyler Piston and the runs just kept pouring in over the next game and a half to result in two more wins for Biola.

After the 16-7 and 13-6 victories over Saint Katherine, Biola is 8-2 at home and 15-9 overall headed back into PacWest play. The Eagles also finished the series with 42 runs over the three-game stretch, the most number of runs Biola has scored over a three-game span since March 2010 when it scored 45 runs and won three-straight against San Diego Christian.

With Piston's homer coming with no outs in the inning, the Eagles kept pouring it on against the Saint Katherine reliever with four more run-scoring his in the third inning. Brandon Cody and RobertAnthony Cruz both lined doubles in that third inning while Jerron Largusa continued his hot hitting with an RBI single.

The Eagles hit four homeruns and eight doubles over the two games on Saturday, with seven of the doubles coming during game one. In the meantime, Largusa hit a two-run homerun in game two and has driven in runs in eight-straight contests and 12 of Biola's last 13 games to give him a team-best 27 RBI's this season. He'll carry a 15-game hitting streak into next week's series with Azusa Pacific and is within nine games of the program-best hitting streak.

While six Eagles recorded multi-hit games during game one as the lineup pounded out 18 hits, Larson and Honus Kindreich lived up to the first letter of their last name by striking out six Firebirds each. Both Kindreich brothers went three innings and older brother Honus was credited with his first win of the season after surrendering just two hits and two unearned runs over his three innings.

Tyler Mead was also effective in relief and allowed just one hit over his two innings of work during the seventh and eighth. Then Bentley Acee finished out the game by getting the final three outs in his third appearance of the season. Piston finished game one with the most RBI's in the game with four while Miguel Abascal reached safely five times with two singles and three walks.

In retrospect, game two progressed almost identically to game one. The Firebirds scored first with a single run to open up the game against Brayden Englert. But Biola responded by tying the game quickly, this time with a bases-loaded walk from Tyler Baca, before a homerun early in the third inning kicked off an inning that blew the game open.

RobertAnthony Cruz led off the bottom of the third inning by smashing a belt-high fastball over the centerfield fence for his first homerun of the year to give Biola the 2-1 lead in the game and followed that up with a two-run two-out double in the same inning as the Eagles scored nine runs and sent 15 batters to the plate.

Outside of Cruz' homer and double, the Eagles had five other hits, including Largusa's aforementioned two-run shot, and five free passes in the inning. Cruz finished the final game of the series with three hits, four RBI's and a .330 batting average. He had five extra-base hits in the series and raised his batting average by 32 points.

Over the next few innings, the Firebirds would bring the game a bit closer at 11-5 and held the Eagles scoreless in the fifth and sixth. But then Jackson Collins rediscovered his power stroke in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run blast to straight-center to record his fourth homerun in the past five games while he made the score 13-5.

Collins' roundtripper came on the heels of two perfect innings from reliever Kenny Carillo, who was credited with the win after striking out three on 24 pitches. Englert finished just shy of qualifying for the win with three runs allowed over four innings and collecting five strikeouts.

The Eagles will head to Azusa on Friday to play a doubleheader at the Cougar Baseball Complex starting at 3 p.m.
