LA MIRADA, Calif. ---
The Eagles caught the short end of a few bad breaks during their most recent series at Point Loma last weekend. Biola came within one half inning of what would have been a big series split with the No. 17 Sea Lions in the final game of the set thanks to clutch hitting late in the game by Jackson Collins, RJ Bates and Jerron Largusa. But Point Loma rallied to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh and hit a walkoff homerun to win the game and the series.
Throughout the set with the Sea Lions, Biola indicated that it has the pieces to string together a nice win streak in PacWest play if everything is clicking. Collins proved himself to be a Sea Lions' threat, going 5-for-6 in the series with three extra-base hits and three RBI's. Four of Bates' five hits in the series went for extra-bases as he ties Largusa for most extra-base hits on the team with nine. But Largusa stood out to end the Eagles' at-bats on Sunday with a key double that drove in RoberthAnthony Cruz to put Biola up 4-3 in the final inning with his first hit of the game. Largusa's double pushed his hitting streak to a team-high 12 games, putting him halfway to the program record of 24 set by Randy Brouwer in 1982. The senior outfielder currently leads the Eagles in all major hitting categories, including walks with 11. But he's followed closely by basically every other regular in the starting lineup: five Eagles have driven in at least 10 runs this year while six have scored at least 10 times.

The Eagles will face fellow NCCAA West Region representative Saint Katherine three times this week to revive an exciting rivalry from 2018 that stoke both teams qualification for the NCCAA World Series in Easley, South Carolina. Biola went 3-0 against Saint Katherine last year, including a 3-2 win in walkoff fashion for the NCCAA West Regional Championship, but the Firebirds made it a contest each time. All three games were decided by two runs or fewer and the Firebirds went on to register a 2-2 record at the NCCAA World Series. But Saint Katherine hasn't started the 2019 season with the same firepower that it had in 2018. Saint Katherine is scoring just over five runs per game after averaging over nine during the regular season last year and have just more men who have hit homeruns this year compared to eight for Biola. The pitching staff has also allowed 130 runs and 79 strikeouts in 20 games this season but their best starter, Ryan James, has 32 strikeouts in 26.2 innings this year for a 4.05 ERA.
