Biola Moves Up To Second

The Eagles play their best two rounds of the Biola Spring Invitational to move into second place and get two top-10 finishers.

March 18, 2019

MURRIETA, Calif. --- The Biola Men's Golf team wrapped up the Biola Spring Invitational on Tuesday with a strong finish that guaranteed a second-place finish and two top-10 finishers in Kyle McAbee and Austin Bishop.

The third round was the best round collectively for Head Coach Cory Page's group, as Biola's team score of 325 created four much-needed shots of separation between it and third-place Vanguard to eventually beat the Lions by 10 strokes. All four of the counting scores for the Eagles were between 80 and 82 over the final 18 holes, with senior Dominic Ariondo leading the group with that 80 score and Scott Hatfield jumping in with an 82 in his final round to shave seven strokes of his first playthrough on Tuesday.

That put the Eagles in second place behind the Hawaii Pacific Sharks, who took the tournament with a team score of 947 and had the top-two finishers in Zach Kwan and Sirasit Prateepmongko.

Kyle McAbee remained Biola's top finisher after scoring a scoring a 77 on Monday with a birdie and an eagle. McAbee concluded the tournament by shooting an 80 and 83 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for fourth with a three-round score of 240 and was followed closely by a calm, cool and consistent Austin Bishop who finished the invite in ninth place.

After carding an 80 on Monday, Bishop followed up with an 81 and 82, respectively, in the second and third rounds. The Glendora, California-native made par on three-straight holes starting at No. 11 in the second round and then rattled off a birdie and four-consecutive pars from holes 11 to 15 in the third round to carry himself to a +3 (39) on the back nine.

The ninth-place finish in the best mark for Bishop in non-dual-match competition this year, besting his 18th place finish at the CSUSB Coyote Classic in mid-February.

Ariondo and Kaden Page both moved up the leaderboard during the course of the final round and both men finished in the top-15 finishes. It's a season-best finish for Ariondo, who was 13th out of 27 golfers, and the second top-15 finish of the season for Page, who carded a 254.

This year's walk-ons Hatfield and Dreher also closed very well at Bear Creek GC, improving their score with every round of play. Dreher's total span of improvement was five strokes from his first round to an 89 in the third playthrough while Hatfield had that aforementioned 82 in the final round and bested his first round mark by 13 shots.

The Eagles will head back out on the road for their next tournament, heading to Turlock at the beginning of April to take part in the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational hosted by Stanislaus State. The first round is scheduled for April 1
