Battle With The Belles

Biola Women’s Tennis shows more promising signs on Tuesday before losing a home match to Angelo State.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Monday's match will go down as a rare loss at the Biola Tennis Center for the Eagles. But you really had to be there to see how well Biola played against Angelo State in preparation for a big match on Wednesday against a PacWest opponent.

Head Coach David Goodman's group started the day with inspired doubles play that forced the No. 3 fixture into the role of rubber match for the doubles decision. Angelo State showed itself to be a strong team, both physically and technically, from the start and attacked the Eagles with volleys at the net on all three courts.

But the Eagles responded by emphasizing cross-court ground strokes and playing the baseline to slow the Belles' early lead. Esther Lee and Lauren Lee, in particular, wrestled control of the match away from their opponents at No. 1 by overcoming an early single-game deficit and taking their doubles matchup by a score of 6-4.

The final point was a microcosm of the victory for the No. 1 duo, as Esther Lee pounded a number of forehands cross-court while Lauren Lee waited out the rally at the net until the perfect moment to poach a return that was close enough to the center-T for her to smash at her counterpart's feet.

The win was the third of the season for E. Lee/L. Lee and evened Biola with Angelo State at one doubles match apiece with No. 3 still in play. After both team surrounded their court, Anna Hartmann and Lily Waterhouse came up with a big hold-of-serve at 5-3 to stay alive. But the Eagles' No. 3 team couldn't advance past 30-15 in the next game before dropping the set and the tossup decision to the Belles for the first point.

Coming off the heels of very encouraging play in doubles, the Eagles continued to play hard during singles in their effort to comeback. Esther Lee took the first set at No. 1 to underline that the Eagles' best is able to matchup with any opponent they face. Tinisee Kandakai and Ines Diaz both had their share of impressive winners and were tireless in their rally construction during their singles matches. They just didn't get enough breaks from unforced errors on the other side of the net to really take control.

Lauren Lee's match followed a similar line at No. 4 since the majority of the game she played went to deuce points. Lee lost the first set before her match was called because the Belles had clinched 4-0. Diaz' and Esther Lee's match were also halted in the second set.

The Eagles will play at the Biola Tennis Center for the third-straight afternoon on Wednesday when they host Dominican at 2 p.m.
