Game Recap: Softball |

Series Comes To Wild Finish

HPU wins its only game of the series as two teams make 11 errors.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Game four of the Biola - Hawaii Pacific series was drastically different than any of the first three games as the two teams combined for 14 total runs and 11 total fielding errors as HPU worked a wild 8-6 win to close out the four-game set.

Hawaii Pacific was in charge throughout the entire game after taking advantage of a hit, an error and a double steal to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Biola was able to get the game tied for a very brief moment and managed to pull within one at several points throughout the night, but could never again take the lead.

The first such occasion was in the bottom of the first inning, when the Eagles cut the deficit in half on a Kayla Neff two-out solo homerun. It was Neff's fifth big fly of the year, which is a team-high.

The Sharks got that run back in the top half of the very next inning as a lead-off walk came back to haunt starter Paula Damas and make the score 3-1 HPU.

A two-out, two-base error by the center fielder allowed Kylie Velasco to reach second base at the bottom of the third and she was brought home to score with a Kayla Neff single, which helped Neff briefly take the team-lead with her 12th RBI of the season.

Biola turned a lead-off double from Areana Ramos into one run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at three. Perhaps more importantly though the HPU pitcher was able to get a bases-loaded line out to end the inning and prevent Biola from taking the lead.

HPU would grab the lead back the next half inning as two hits, a pair of hit-by-pitches and a wild pitch allowed the Sharks to score twice and put more pressure on the Biola offense.

The Eagles would get a base runner in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn't push anything across the plate. Instead, more scoring came from HPU one inning later as the Sharks expanded the lead to 7-3 with a second-straight two-run inning. This time, HPU took advantage of four Biola fielding errors to compile their runs.

Biola would answer back in a big way in the bottom of the sixth, using a Kylie Velasco two-run homer as the primary fuel in a three-run inning. The Eagles were able to make it close at 7-6, but again left the bases loaded with a hard-hit ground ball right at the third baseman ending the Eagles' chance to tie or take the lead.

Hawaii Pacific would use its speed to manufacture one more run in the seventh before the Eagles' offense just sputtered to a halt in their final at-bats, going down 1-2-3 and suffering the team's first loss since back on March 1.

Only six of the game's 14 runs were earned runs as both teams suffered some defensive struggles throughout. The Eagles committed a season-high seven errors and HPU also had its largest number of the year in that category with four.

HPU's starter threw the complete game to get the wild win, throwing 138 pitches to persevere and come away with a victory. The loss was given to Jennifer Morinishi who took over for Paula Damas in the third inning.

Not to be lost in the shuffle, Kayla Neff continues to rake this season. The junior was 3-for-4 with two RBI in the game. Areana Ramos also had one of her best performances of the season in going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The loss drops Biola to 9-9 (4-4 PacWest), while Hawaii Pacific is able to salvage one win in the four-game set to improve to 18-14 (11-6 PacWest).

Biola has off until it hosts back-to-back doubleheaders against Hawaii Hilo next week on Tuesday and Wednesday.
