Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Is Fun!

Biola hits a few homers and gets key contributions in a debut to win 10-5.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Softball's bats caught fire in game one against Hawaii Hilo on Tuesday as the Eagles hung a 10-spot on the Vulcans on the merit of 13 hits. The Eagles won the game 10-5 over a UHH team that allowed just 2.9 runs-per-game coming into the day.

Biola scored the first four runs of the game, helped along by Areana Ramos' first homerun of the year. Then Hawaii Hilo tied the game with a four-spot of their own in the fifth inning. Fortunately for BU, the bats woke up in a big way in their half of the fifth scoring six to reassert their dominance in the game. Kayla Neff had the big hit of that inning, a three-run bomb to extend her PacWest lead with her sixth homer of the year.

The runs allowed Biola to hold on for the win and hand the Hawii Hilo starter Isabelle Mejia the first loss of her season (7-1). Paige Austin battled through some high-pressure innings to earn her fifth win of the year and move to 5-4.

The go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth was scored off the bat of freshman Madison Blossey, who was finally able to make her first appearance of the year after battling injury. Blossey looped a pop-up behind the second baseman, who could not make the play, allowing Missy Poti to score Biola's fifth run of the game after leading off the fifth with a two-bagger.

Blossey also factored into the Eagles' win when she came around to score the sixth run, which was ultimately the game-winner. She scored on a Ruth Munoz RBI that preceded the Kayla Neff three-run blast.

Five players had multiple hits for Biola in the game, led by another monster performance from Neff, who had three hits. Joining her with multiple hits was Munoz, Hailey Boyett, Ramos and Poti.

Every spot in the lineup reached base for BU, except for the leadoff spot. Andi Hormel had one of those interesting days in the batter's box where she was plunked twice and reached base via a hit. Nine different players combined to score the Eagles' 10 runs.

Even with all the offense, both starting pitchers were able to work their way out of handful of jams. The two teams combined to strand 21 runners on base in the game.

It was a big performance for the Eagles to begin the series on a high note against a very good Hawaii Hilo team. The loss drops the Vulcans to 16-5 (11-2 PacWest). Biola improved to 10-9 (5-4 PacWest).

The two teams are currently playing game two of the series with two more scheduled for Saturday evening.
