ABOUT LAST WEEK: It was a solid week for Biola as they went 2-1 against the Hawaii schools for the second time this season. The Eagles earned season sweeps over Hawaii Hilo and Hawaii Pacific and pushed Chaminade to the brink before falling short, 84-78. The win over Hawaii Pacific on Saturday clinched a winning season for Biola for the 36th time under the direction of Dr. Dave Holmquist. In 39 years as the head coach at BU, coach Holmquist's teams have had just three seasons with "losing records". Two of those three years came in the first years in a new conference/league. The third was a bit deceiving at 15-16. Biola is guaranteed at least a three-game improvement from its 17-18 record, but could see as much as a five-game improvement now. Last week's wins were spurred on by Freshman of the Week Alex Wright recording his first career double-double vs. Hilo and Trevor Treinen dropping a season-high 27 points vs. HPU. Michael Bagatourian also played a big role in the win over HPU, scoring a season-best six made three-pointers to lift him to 18 points.

BIOLA (14-12, 10-10 PacWest) vs DOMINICAN (8-18, 4-16 PacWest): Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Live Video \\ Last Meeting: Biola wins, 75-66 \\ PROMOTION: Free Chick-Fil-A
Biola's final week begins with the Dominican Penguins, a team that finds itself third from the bottom in the PacWest standings after struggling to win away from home this season. The Penguins are just 2-9 in true road contests this season and have lost their last eight road games overall. The last time Dominican got a win on the road was against Notre Dame de Namur back on Dec. 5. The Penguins did win their last time out though, taking advantage of their senior night to defeat Holy Names, 75-73. The game was won with a late three-point shot by Dominican's leading scorer Cedric Thomas. Holy Names is a quality win for DUC, since HNU is in position to make the PacWest Conference tournament field this season and finish with a winning record in conference for the first time ever. Thomas had 26 points in the Penguins' win to lead the charge. He's sixth in the PacWest in scoring this season, averaging 16.5 points-per-game. He has six-straight double-digit scoring games and has topped 20 in two of his last three times out. He scored a team-high 18 against the Eagles in the first meeting between these two sides, but that was not enough to help the Penguins overcome Biola's 64 percent shooting. Alex Talma led the effort for BU in that game, going an incredible 10-for-10 from the field to score 23 points. Treinen had 26 points in that game, which is his second-best tally of the season. Biola will look to spread its scoring a bit more and come away with a win on Thursday night to set the team up well for its Senior Night on Saturday. Biola is 14-1 all-time against Dominican, including a 2-0 mark during the NCAA Division II/PacWest era.

BIOLA (14-12, 10-10 PacWest) vs ACADEMY OF ART (10-15, 10-10 PacWest): Saturday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Live Video \\ Last Meeting: Biola wins, 62-54 \\ PROMOTION: Senior Night Ceremony pregame
This night is all about celebrating the Eagles' five seniors. Levi Auble, Christian Carroll, Steve Herve, Alex Talma and Trevor Treinen will all be playing their final game inside of Chase Gym when the Eagles face Academy of Art on Saturday night. If Biola were postseason eligible the two teams would be jockeying for postseason positioning in advance of PacWest tournament. They both come into this week with a 10-10 record, tied for sixth in the conference standings, which is the last team in to the PacWest tournament. ART U could come into this matchup with 11 losses as they face Azusa Pacific (14-6) in Azusa on Thursday night. The Urban Knights lost by just one point when they played APU at home earlier this season. The other team in the mix for that sixth spot is Hawaii Hilo, who has a 10-11 mark and just Chaminade left on the schedule. If Hilo and ART U both end 11-11 or 10-12 then the Vulcans would get the tournament bid on the merit of their shocking win over PacWest Champions, Point Loma. So, ART U comes into this game with a whole lot to play for. Trevor Treinen led the effort in the Eagles' road trip win over Academy of Art with 23 points. The senior shot 9-of-13 from the field and could have a lot riding on his performance this night, in terms of career accomplishments (see below). Biola held Academy of Art to 33 percent shooting in their first matchup. The Urban Knights are a 46-percent shooting team for the season and have shot over 48 percent in all but one of their last six outings. Biola is 1-1 all-time vs. ART U, having only played them since the NCAA Division II era began.

REBOUND RACE: Alex Talma has a chance to end the season as the leading rebounder in the PacWest Conference. The senior averages 8.5 rebounds-per-game to sit tied for the lead over Academy of Art's Andrija Blatancic (8.5). Talma averaged 9.5 rebounds-per-game in the first go-around against the Eagles' two remaining opponents. This season he's been a slightly better rebounder at home, averaging 8.6rpg in Chase Gym vs. 8.4rpg elsewhere.

IN MEMORIAM: Biola Assistant Coach, UCLA Hall of Famer and Cypress College legend Don Johnson passed away last week at the age of 88. Johnson played for John Wooden at UCLA in the early 1950s and then went on to coach at Cypress from 1966-94, becoming the winningest coach in California Community College men's basketball history (588-259). The college dedicated the court in his honor in 2009, naming it "Don Johnson Court." Johnson coached Dr. Dave Holmquist at Cypress and the two remained lifelong friends in the decades since, with Johnson serving as an assistant at Biola for the last 21 years. Johnson is survived by his wife of 68 years, Colette, and their three children. For more information on coach Johnson's humble, wise and selfless contributions to the sport of basketball all around Southern California check out this article about his UCLA Hall of Fame induction in 2013. Cypress College Release.

Update: A celebration of life in honor of Don Johnson will be held Sunday, March 10, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Cypress College in GYM II Don Johnson Court. Refreshments will be available at 1 p.m. Parking will be free in Lots 4 and 5 only. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent at GoFundMe.com/Don-Johnson-Memorial.

SERIES SWEEP: Biola Men's Basketball has an opportunity to achieve its fifth and sixth two-game season series sweep in the PacWest era this week. A win over Dominican and/or Academy of Art would help BU to 2-0 against them this year. This season Biola already has season sweeps over NDNU, Hawaii Hilo and Hawaii Pacific. If BU can complete the sweeps of all five opponents it would be a true testament to the growth of this team that won just five total PacWest games last year.

YEAR 39: Dr. Dave Holmquist just keeps humming along. He's in his 39th season coaching his alma mater and is holding steady in fifth place in the all-time wins list among four-year college men's basketball coaches. Holmquist's 972 wins are third-most among active college coaches, only falling behind Mike Krzyzewski of Duke (1,100) and Herb Magee of NCAA Division II Jefferson University (1,074). Holmquist has averaged 22.8 wins-per-season, including his three years at Fresno Pacific when he first got started in the mid-1970s. This year he's on pace to help the Eagles get 16 (16-14) and end with 974. That would mark a five-win improvement over last year, the Eagles' first at the NCAA Division II level.

MR. 1,400?: Trevor Treinen eclipsed 1,000 career points in his last game last season. The four-year senior comes into this week up to 1,374 points. He's averaged 334 points-per-season over his last three years, with a career-best 442 points last year. His 372 so far this year is second-best in his career. If he can get above 398 this season, he could move into the top-8 all-time among Biola Men's Basketball players. He's currently on pace for around 400 points this season. The current No. 8 is Tim Warkentin (1974-78) at 1,398. The highest spot he could likely reach would be seventh. He'd need 417 points to pass Roger Poppen (1960-63) for that spot. Treinen has upped his points-per-game over the past month or so and is now close to his career-high in single-season scoring average, which came last year. He's averaging 14.3ppg this season and had 15.8ppg a year ago, Treinen is also near the top of the Biola record books in three-pointers made. He comes into this season with 148 through his first three seasons, eighth all-time. He's within 50 of passing Marcus White, Dakari Archer, Nate Rakestraw, Pierre Zook and Doug Newby to move into third all-time behind Weakley (236) and Danny Campbell (203). Coming into the last week of his career he sits at 179 made threes, which is fourth all-time. Next on the list is Newby with 191.

NEXT WEEK: None. See you next year!
