Eagles Bite Back Late

After trailing by as many as 21 points in the second half, Biola made it a three-point game before losing to Hawaii Pacific.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- One half was almost all it took for the Biola Eagles to shock Hawaii Pacific in Chase Gym on Saturday night. The Eagles trailed by as many as 21 and 18 points at the beginning of the third and fourth quarters but rallied back each time to put the pressure on the Sharks.

Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group brought the game within eight points with five minutes left and made it a 55-52 game with 14 seconds left on an Aysia Johnson layup. But Hawaii Pacific's success at the free throw line in those closing moments prevented Biola from completing the comeback and pushed the Sharks to a 59-52 win.

The Sharks had three double-digit scorers on the evening while Tatum Brimley and Jazz Benn made four three-pointers each and had 15 and 14 points, respectively, in the loss. Hawaii Pacific holds onto its third-place standing in the PacWest with a record of 19-8, 17-4 PacWest. Biola still sits a half-game behind Concordia for sixth in conference at 10-16, 8-12 PacWest.

Playing their fourth game in Southern California in seven days, the Sharks came out a bit flat on offense in the first half and scored just 30 points. But HPU took a 12-point lead at halftime by putting pressure on Biola's offense, forcing 13 turnovers and 19 missed shots

But after scoring eight points in the first quarter, the Eagles only played better as the game went on. Benn, Brimley, Johnson and Danita Estorga all chipped in a field goal in the second period before really coming alive in the second half.

Benn and Estorga combined for 12 third-quarter points on 4-of-5 shooting as the Eagles equaled the Sharks' 16-point scoring output. Then Brimley made two threes of her own while Johnson and Mikayla Greens combined for eight additional points to push Biola to its best scoring quarter at 18 points.

Johnson's seven points in the game ties a career-high she set on Jan. 19 at Azusa Pacific. Greens continued her current streak of scoring at least seven points a game on Saturday and has now accomplished the feat in five-consecutive games.

Estorga led all scorers off the bench with nine points, the most points she scored since the Eagles faced the Sharks in Hawaii three weeks ago.

The Eagles will have a few days off before hosting Dominican at Chase Gym on Thursday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
