Down To The Wire

Biola Women’s Basketball draws within a point of Dominican with under two minutes left but the Penguins pull out the road win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles nearly knocked the Dominican Penguins off their feet and put their second-place standing in jeopardy on Thursday night with a rousing second-half performance that drew the cheers of the Chase Gymnasium crowd.

The Eagles drained 12 three-pointers on the evening and really thrived when they were able to knock down those shots. The Penguins made just five threes and had just two points off the bench on Thursday. In fact, the other 65 points in their 67-61 win came from just three of their starters. But they were able to hold onto the game with tough defense in the final minute and clinched a bye in the PacWest tournament with an 18-3 conference record.

"We had an excellent team effort against an outstanding Dominican team; they are ranked No. 8 in the region for good reason," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "But we competed with good focus and determination from the opening tap until the final shot. With some energetic defensive stands at the end of the game we created opportunities to regain the lead, but unfortunately couldn't quite get over the hump."

Despite the fact that Dominican jumped out to a seven-point lead after 10 minutes with 21 first-quarter points, the Eagles hung in the entire game by scoring 13 points or more in all four quarters. Jazz Benn led the Eagles with 10 first-half points on 3-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc while six of her teammates also chipped in the scoring effort to help Biola head into halftime with 27 points.

That was a stark contrast to the Dominican box score, which had just three scorers on it and two 14-point scorers: Natalie Diaz and Marisa Mondave. Diaz, the nation's second leading scorer, played all 40 minutes and hovered right around her season averages with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

That didn't stop Biola from roaring back in the second half though to make it a one-possession game in the third and the fourth quarter. The Eagles dropped five threes in the third quarter, including back-to-back triples from Sara Dougan and Aysia Johnson, to make it a 46-44 game after trailing by 12 just 24 seconds into the half.

Biola was outscored by six points for the duration of the quarter after making it a two-point game, but it was still a great period for Dougan nonetheless. The senior forward scored seven points in the third quarter on the way to a season-high 12 on the night and also pulled down seven boards in her second start of the season.

Then it was Tatum Brimley takeover time in the fourth quarter as she led all scorers with 10 points while converting three three-point plays. Brimley's best stretch came in the span between the 4:06 and the 2:35 marks in the fourth quarter when she picked up two steals, got a rebound, and scored nine unanswered points all by herself to close her teams gap from 12 points to just three with 2:35 left.

A Jazz Benn layup a minute later brought Biola within one point. But Dominican made eight of its nine free throws in the final period and made its last four attempts to close things out.

Biola will have a day off before wrapping up its season at Chase Gym on Saturday. The Eagles host Academy of Art for a 5:30 p.m. start.
