Late Surge Clinches 10th Win

Biola Women’s Basketball pulls off a late comeback with after being down by eight late in the third quarter.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After being down by as many as eight points late in the third quarter, the Biola Eagles used a late rally on Thursday night to maintain their perfect winning record against the Chaminade Silverswords.

Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group rattled off eight unanswered points to end the third quarter that tied the game at 43-43 and then built a nine-point lead with about three minutes left to get out in front of Chaminade and win 66-63.

"I am very proud of how this team has handled adversity," said Nakamura. "Recently we have been searching to play our best game, and the the team found the solution by staying optimistic, pulling together, playing unselfishly, doubling their concentration on the details, and giving all they had for the Lord, and for each other."

The scoring was slow-going through the first half as the Silverswords made just two field goals over the first 10 minutes and had 23 first-half points. The Eagles responded with 27 points over the first 20 minutes and were paced by Jazz Benn with her 11 points in the first half.

Despite the fact that Biola out-rebounded Chaminade 27-to-17 in the first half, the Silverswords were able to stay in the game with nine points off of turnovers and the Eagles' .313 shooting percentage in the first half.

But the speed of the game picked up quickly in the second half when Biola made 62 percent of its shots and Destiny Castro caught fire for Chaminade.

Coming into the game as Chaminade's leading scorer at 19.1 points per game, Castro drained 10 points in the third quarter and was supported by eight points from Hunter Liftee on perfect shooting to wrestle the lead from Biola.

The Silverswords went on a 10-0 run during a two-minute stretch midway through the third quarter to take their eight-point lead. But a layup from Danita Estorga and back-to-back three pointers from Brenna Khaw and Tatum Brimley quickly erased that gap and put the teams on even footing headed into the final quarter.

"Chaminade is a very tough, athletic team, and they are playing their best basketball of the season right now," said Nakamura. "It was exciting to see us continue to battle even when we were down eight with three minutes left in the third, and the team did just enough to finish on top in the end. I am very happy for the players!"

Like Benn, Brimley finished in double figures for the Eagles with 14 points and did most of her damage at the free throw line. Brimley's 90 percent success rate at the charity stripe became very important late in the game as the two teams combined for 43 points in the final period.

Chaminade made it as close as a one-point game at 64-63 with three seconds left. But Brimley made her final two free throws of the line on the very next play to put the game out of reach. Brimley went 5-for-6 in that situation during the fourth quarter while Benn was 4-for-4. Additionally, four Eagles chipped in at least four points in the quarter, including Mikayla Greens, who recorded a double-double on Thursday.

The Eagles will look to continue their success at home on Saturday when they host Hawaii Pacific at 5:30 p.m.
