Scoring Hard To Come By

Biola drops its second game of the year to Hawaii Hilo after shooting just 26 percent from the field.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Eagles opened a five-game homestand on Tuesday by welcoming Hawaii Hilo to Chase Gym for the first time ever after playing the Vulcans two weeks ago in Hilo.

Just like the Vulcans did in their win against Biola on February 4, the visiting team got out to a double-digit lead in the first half and carried it to another victory by a score of 56-48.

The Eagles drop to 9-15, 7-11 PacWest after averaging just 12 points per quarter during the game and shooting 26 percent from the field. Hawaii-Hilo improves to 5-14 in PacWest play with its second road win of the year behind Allie Navarette's sixth-straight double-double and two other double-digit scorers.

"Hawaii-Hilo played very well," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "We dug ourselves a 14-point hole in the 1st half, but we battled until the end. We always do a good job sticking together and competing, even when playing from behind."

Coming out of the gate, the Eagles dominated the boards in the first quarter with a plus-seven rebound differential and 10 offensive boards. The early second-chance opportunities prevented the Vulcans from really getting their offense going and made it a very close game after 10 minutes despite the unfriendliness of the iron to Biola over that span.

The home team started the second quarter down just four points at 14-10 after shooting 4-for-20 from the field in the first quarter. Jazz Benn got the offense going a bit for the Eagles in the second quarter with six points, but so did the Vulcans as UH Hilo knocked down eight fields, five of which were threes, to score a game-high 21 points in the period.

Benn would score a team-leading 17 after contributing 12 of her team's 21 points in the first half. Then Mikayla Greens and Brenna Khaw would both score six points apiece in the second half to help Biola push back.

But the Eagles' 3-for-18 mark from beyond the arc over the final 20 minutes prevented them from really climbing back into the game. Khaw buried one of those three pointers with 2:32 left in the third to make it a seven-point game. But a three-pointer in response by Sara Shimizu with three seconds left in the period put the Vulcans back up by 12. Hawaii-Hilo would hold a double-digit lead for the first nine minutes of the fourth quarter until the Eagles brought the game back within 10 in the final minutes.

The Eagles will return to Chase Gym Thursday for another home game against a PacWest school from Hawaii. Biola will tipoff with Chaminade at 5:30 p.m.
