ABOUT LAST WEEK: It was a tough week for this team last week. The Eagles could've just as easily gone 2-0 as they did 0-2, playing competitive games against both Concordia Irvine and Fresno Pacific. Biola held a 46-37 lead over CUI with eight minutes left to play thanks to a fantastic start to the second half, but Concordia held Biola to just one field goal in the final four minutes to come from behind and win. It was a similar scenario at FPU as Biola held a convincing lead of 57-49 with 3:57 to play but then got outscored 12-0 over the final 3:57 to lose by four. Avoiding those long scoring draughts will be the key to a more successful week this week.

BIOLA (12-11, 8-9 PacWest) vs HAWAII HILO (11-11, 9-9 PacWest): Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Live Video \\ Last Meeting: Biola wins, 79-77
The last time these two sides met Biola came away with a surprising and enthralling road victory. The Eagles had their best half of basketball in the second half in Hilo to overcome a large halftime deficit and win the game, 79-77. That meeting was just 15 days ago, and Biola has played just twice since then and lost both contests (by narrow margin). The Eagles will be chomping at the bit to get back in the win column and Hawaii Hilo will be looking to avenge a tough home loss and pick up a second win on their four-game SoCal road trip. The Vulcans have played four times since these two teams last met and managed their biggest victory of the season during that span when they upset the PacWest-leading Point Loma Sea Lions in Golden Gymnasium on Valentine's Day evening. Hilo made 31 of their 57 field goal attempts that night (.544) and sunk nine threes to hand No. 12 Point Loma its second PacWest loss of the season (17-2). Larry Bush went off for 27 points on 11-of-16 shooting to lead UHH to the win that night. Bush also scored over 20 the night Biola and Hilo tangled out in Hawaii (22). He's coming into tonight's contest with double-figure scoring in each of his last 13 contests. He is also the reigning PacWest Conference Player of the Week. Biola comes into play tonight following a short break in the schedule and is hungry for a win after blowing an eight-point lead in the final three minutes at Fresno Pacific last week.

BIOLA (12-11, 8-9 PacWest) vs RV CHAMINADE (18-5, 12-5 PacWest): Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Live Video \\ Last Meeting: Chaminade wins, 82-58
Chaminade is in the middle of a tough portion of their schedule. The Silverswords are hitting all four SoCal PacWest schools this week, which means the top-3 teams in the conference standings. They lost to Point Loma already and will be geared up for an important battle with Azusa Pacific on Tuesday before coming to Biola on Thursday. Hopefully, Biola will be able to capitalize on being the lowest team in the standings on Chaminade's road trip schedule and catch the Silverswords napping. Chaminade took the first matchup between these two sides pretty handily, winning by 24 points. It was Biola's second-largest margin of defeat during this PacWest season. A long (1-for-14) cold stretch from Biola allowed Chaminade to take a double-digit lead into the locker room at halftime and the Silverswords never looked back, only adding to their lead over the final 20 minutes. Aside from their overtime loss at Point Loma, Chaminade has been rolling as of late, winning four of their last five contests. That stretch was started with the win over BU back on Jan. 31. The 'Swords are powered by three upperclassmen (Grant Dressler, Erik Scheive, Tyler Cartaino) who all score 17 points-per-game on average. This has helped them be the top scoring team in the conference all season long (81.3ppg). A win for Biola on Thursday would be big for BU's chances to finish the season strong and would also pull this all-time series even at 4-4.

BIOLA (12-11, 8-9 PacWest) vs HAWAII PACIFIC (7-7, 4-15 PacWest): Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Live Video \\ Last Meeting: Biola wins, 65-56
It was a close game in Honolulu the last time these two teams met just about two weeks ago. The Eagles managed a 10-point advantage in the second half to overcome a surprising one-point halftime deficit. Christian Carroll ended up being the biggest story of the day, leading the team with his 11 second-half points, thanks to a 4-of-5 shooting performance (3 threes). The Eagles also had eight second-half points a piece from the trio of Trevor Treinen, Alex Wright and Levi Auble, ending the game with five double digit scorers for the first (and only) time this season. HPU only had two players hit double-digits in that same game, led by David Rowlands with 13. That was one of just three double-digit scoring efforts Rowlands had this year. The Eagles limited the Sharks' leading scorer (Jonathan Janssen) to just six points on 3-of-10 shooting. HPU comes into this week with losses in six of their last eight and 12 of their last 15 contests. They beat Academy of Art and Dominican back-to-back on Feb. 6 and Feb. 10 for their first back-to-back wins of the conference season. As a reward for their solid week, the Sharks' Daniel Melifonwu won PacWest Defender of the Week honors last week. He had five blocks in the two wins. The Eagles get to host that same pair of teams next week.

REBOUND RACE: Alex Talma has a chance to end the season as the leading rebounder in the PacWest Conference. The senior averages 8.7 rebounds-per-game to hold a slim lead over Academy of Art's Andrija Blatancic (8.4). Talma averaged 8.4 rebounds-per-game in the first go-around against the Eagles' five remaining opponents. This season he's been a slightly better rebounder at home, averaging 8.9rpg in Chase Gym vs. 8.4rpg elsewhere.

IN MEMORIAM: Biola Assistant Coach, UCLA Hall of Famer and Cypress College legend Don Johnson passed away last week at the age of 88. Johnson played for John Wooden at UCLA in the early 1950s and then went on to coach at Cypress from 1966-94, becoming the winningest coach in California Community College men's basketball history (588-259). The college dedicated the court in his honor in 2009, naming it "Don Johnson Court." Johnson coached Dr. Dave Holmquist at Cypress and the two remained lifelong friends in the decades since, with Johnson serving as an assistant at Biola for the last 21 years. Johnson is survived by his wife of 68 years, Colette, and their three children. For more information on coach Johnson's humble, wise and selfless contributions to the sport of basketball all around Southern California check out this article about his UCLA Hall of Fame induction in 2013. Cypress College Release.

SERIES SWEEP: Biola Men's Basketball has an opportunity to achieve its third and fourth two-game season series sweep in the PacWest era this week. A win over HPU and/or UHH would help BU to 2-0 against them this year. The only other times Biola's managed a 2-0 season record against a PacWest foe has been Holy Names in 2017-18 and Notre Dame de Namur earlier this year. Later this year, Biola also has a chance to complete 2-0 years against Dominican (2/28) and Academy of Art (3/2). If BU can complete the sweeps of all five opponents it would be a true testament to the growth of this team that won just five total PacWest games last year.

YEAR 39: Dr. Dave Holmquist just keeps humming along. He's in his 39th season coaching his alma mater and is holding steady in fifth place in the all-time wins list among four-year college men's basketball coaches. Holmquist's 970 wins are third-most among active college coaches, only falling behind Mike Krzyzewski of Duke (1,100) and Herb Magee of NCAA Division II Jefferson University (1,074). Holmquist has averaged 22.8 wins-per-season, including his three years at Fresno Pacific when he first got started in the mid-1970s. This year he's on pace to help the Eagles get 16 (16-14) and end with 974.

MR. 1,400?: Trevor Treinen eclipsed 1,000 career points in his last game last season. The four-year senior comes into this week up to 1,316 points. He's averaged 334 points-per-season over his last three years, with a career-best 442 points last year. If he can get around 375 this season, he could move into the top-10 all-time among Biola Men's Basketball players. He's currently on pace for around 385 points this season. The current No. 10 is Bryan Weakley (1998-02) at 1,322. The highest spot he could likely reach would be seventh. He'd need 417 points to pass Roger Poppen (1960-63) for that spot. Treinen has upped his points-per-game over the past month or so and is now close to his career-high in single-season scoring average, which came last year. He's averaging 13.7ppg this season and had 15.8ppg a year ago, Treinen is also near the top of the Biola record books in three-pointers made. He comes into this season with 148 through his first three seasons, eighth all-time. He's within 50 of passing Marcus White, Dakari Archer, Nate Rakestraw, Pierre Zook and Doug Newby to move into third all-time behind Weakley (236) and Danny Campbell (203).

NEXT WEEK: vs Dominican (7-18, 3-16 PacWest) - Thursday Feb. 28, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. (FREE CHICK-FIL-A); vs Academy of Art (9-15, 9-10 PacWest) - Saturday March 2, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. (SENIOR NIGHT)
