Second-Chance Points Sink Eagles

Biola loses its final road game of the season in Fresno after the Sunbirds take the advantage in offensive rebounds.

FRESNO, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball traveled to Fresno for a Thursday night meeting with Fresno Pacific to conclude the road portion of its PacWest schedule.

The Eagles saw three women score in double figures, including senior Jessica Shill, who made every shot she took on the evening to tie for the team lead with 11 points. But Fresno Pacific set up shop in the key from the early going and eventually scored 27 second-chance points on this way to an 83-67 win.

The victory is the 16th of the season for Fresno Pacific, which improves to 12-6 in conference play. Biola remains in seventh place in the conference after the loss and will have to wait until next week to win its 10th game of the season.

Biola jumped out of the gates to start the games with back-to-back three-pointers from Brenna Khaw and a layup from Mikayla Greens that created an 8-2 lead for the Eagles. But Fresno Pacific pushed right back with three unanswered fields goals, two of which came after offensive rebounds, to make it 10-8.

The Sunbirds would not allow Biola to regain the lead for the rest of the game and held a 21-15 lead after 10 minutes despite Shill's three in the final possession of the period. Then FPU added 11 more second-chance points during the second quarter to finish the half with 41 points.

Tatum Brimley drained both of her team's second-quarter buckets from three-point range in the final four minutes of the first half and went into the locker room with 10 points. But Fresno Pacific prevented Biola's bench from scoring any points in the first half and put a damper on the Eagles' momentum by drawing 11 fouls and going to the free throw line eight times in the first half.

Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group took the offense to another level in the second half after starting the third period with a 41-27 deficit. The Eagles scored a total of 40 second-half points, including eight from Jazz Benn, six from Shill and 21 points off the bench.

But the Sunbirds continued to make their free throws and three more treys than Biola to maintain their double-digit lead. Shill made all four of her shots in the second half to push her into double figures for the second time this season. And Mikayla Greens also picked up two additional rebounds in the second half to register 10 rebounds for the second-straight game.

Jessica Malazarte finished as the Sunbirds' leading scorer with 16 points while Cassie Pisik recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to help FPU earn a +22 rebound margin on the night.

The Eagles will have the weekend off before starting a five-game homestand next week. They'll welcome Hawaii Hilo to Chase Gym on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
