Game Recap: Softball |

Lights Out On Opening Day

Biola gets an incredible pitching performance in tough game one, lights go out in game two.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- With all of the starts and stops through the first few weeks of this Biola Softball season, it was fitting that on the first official, countable night of play also had some starts and stops of its own.

The Eagles and NAIA No. 9 Hope International played some lengthy, choppy games with lots of lead changes and an abrupt stop to the second game, ultimately resulting in Hope International escaping La Mirada with a pair of wins.

The first game went about three hours with the Royals taking a 3-2 win in nine innings. Game two evened the night out as it went just five innings before being called early since the lights at Freedom Field are not allowed to remain on past 10 p.m. (per city ordinance). HIU was leading 12-10 at the time after a wild first five innings.

The first game was a bit more pitching focused, with neither team scoring over the first three innings and neither side having more than one hit in any half-inning during the first half of the game.

Paige Austin held the Royals scoreless and limited them to just two hits over the first four innings of her season, racking up eight strikeouts in the process. Biola broke open the scoring in the bottom half of the fourth with a leadoff homerun for Kayla Neff resulting in the first official run of the season for BU.

That lead would only last one half-inning as HIU struck back in the top of the fifth with a one-out walk, steal and single combination. Biola did a little run producing of its own in the bottom of the fifth, capitalizing on a Ruth Munoz leadoff single by using back-to-back sacrifice bunts and a Jennifer Morinishi single to pull back out ahead, 2-1.

That lead held until the top of the seventh when Austin went back out more than 100 pitches into her outing looking to lock things down. She got a flyout to start the frame, but then the speedy Bree Maikai managed a single to set the table for the heart of the HIU lineup. She scored the game-tying run when the next hitting singled to the gap in right center.

Biola would get a runner on base in the bottom of the seventh (an Andi Hormel single), but could not score and the game was pushed to extra innings. A Morinishi single to leadoff the eighth had the Eagles sitting pretty after she was advanced to second on a Kylie Velasco sacrifice bunt. Unfortunately, the freshman was caught stealing on her way to third and the Eagles' chance to score fell by the wayside.

The Royals capitalized on their new life in the top of the ninth with a leadoff triple resulting in a run when the second batter of the inning singled. That forced Head Coach Nikki Udria to take Austin out and insert Kaile Chavez to the circle.

Chavez would get out the inning with no further damage done, stranding two Royals on the base paths. The Eagles' offense couldn't muster up anymore in the bottom of the ninth and suffered the tough game one loss.

Morinishi and Munoz both had multi-hit games in the opener and Austin's eight-inning, 14-strikeout effort was definitely a bright spot. The sophomore hurler would end up throwing 161 pitches in the opener, effectively making her unavailable for game two.

The second game was a totally different story, with the two teams combining for 22 runs in just five innings played.

Biola scored four in the second and one in the third to take a 5-2 lead that seemed commanding when comparing it to the pitcher's dual in game one. However, five hits, four walks and two Biola errors allowed Hope International to chalk up an eight-spot in the top of the fourth inning, flipping the game on its head.

The Eagles answered back with three of their own in the bottom half, powered by a Missy Poti two-run double, and both teams put up two in their respective halves of the fifth but the Eagles' production was too little, too late when it was time to turn off the lights.

Biola committed four errors in the second game, which was a big shift from the defensive effort they had shown this season with error-free efforts in today's game one and the partial game played on Sunday.

Hope International scored its 12 runs with the help of just three extra-base hits (all doubles). Their hitters were patient though, taking eight walks and two HBPs.

Biola had five extra-base hits, with Poti and Kylie Velasco each hitting two doubles and the latter leaving the yard with a two-run shot in the fifth.

Velasco (4-for-7) and Munoz (4-for-6) were the most effective on offense during this first day for Biola. Munoz scored twice and Velasco drove in four as the sophomores stole the show. All four of Velasco's hits went for extra bases (3 2B, 1 HR).

Biola falls to 0-2 but should still feel confident heading into this weekend's Cactus Classic tournament, knowing they were right there with serious chances to win both games against a very talented HIU side (7-0).

The tournament play begins Friday with a 9 a.m. PT tilt against Oklahoma Baptist University (3-2).
