ABOUT LAST WEEK: Biola Men's Basketball had its grittiest performance of the 2018-19 season in its only game of the week last week - a road tilt at Hawaii Hilo. The Eagles could not buy a shot in the first half, but then outscored the hosting Vulcans 50-29 over the final 20 minutes to stun UHH and walk out of Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium with a 79-77 win.
Levi Auble drove the comeback, taking advantage of his first start of the season to score 23 points on an 11-of-17 shooting performance. He's had five double-digit scoring efforts in his last six times out.

Last Meeting: CUI wins, 84-78 \\ Promotion: Free Chick-Fil-A sandwiches, RED SEA NIGHT (Wear Red)
Concordia Irvine comes into Tuesday night's contest as winners of four of their last five contests, including their biggest win of the season - a 91-85 overtime victory over PacWest leaders Point Loma. Concordia took the first game of the season series against Biola by narrow margin, winning 84-78 at CU Arena in Irvine. Both teams played well in that game, but Biola was hampered by poor free throw shooting and some turnovers down the stretch. Concordia had six players reach double-digits in that matchup, led by 18 points from
Brian Chambers. Twelve of Chambers' 18 points came in a perfect performance at the free throw line, including going 8-for-8 in the final one minute.
Michael Bagatourian was Biola's top scorer that time out, ending with 23 points on his best shooting performance of the season (10-of-14). Chambers has been the most consistent scorer for CUI all season long, averaging 17.3 points-per-game, which is fifth in the PacWest. No other member of Concordia averages double-digits, but they've got great depth with eight players averaging between 6.4 and 9.1 points-per-game. CUI averages 75.6 points-per-game this season, which is third in the league and six points more than BU's average. They allow 70 points-per-game, which is fifth in the conference and about two more points than BU allows. So, just like early in the season in Irvine, expect this to be a nail biter. There will be free Chick-Fil-A sandwiches handed out to the first few hundred people in attendance. Also, we encourage all fans to wear red for a RED SEA NIGHT.

Last Meeting: Biola wins, 73-69
Biola will have a chance to sweep the season series with Fresno Pacific when the two sides meet for the second time in a 20-day span on Thursday night. Biola is 63-27 all-time against the Sunbirds, including the team's narrow 73-69 win over FPU at home earlier this year. That game was the Eagles' second-best three-point shooting performance of the year, with BU going 50 percent beyond the arc with 10 three-point makes. Five of those 10 came from Bagatourian, who could be fixing to have a big week, facing two opponents he made a big splash against the first time around. Biola used a 15-9 run at the end of the first half to build a significant enough lead to withstand some late pressure from FPU and get the win back in January. Biola will likely need a little more scoring from inside this go-around as it can't count on replicating that three-point performance and only got 16 points combined between its forwards in the last meeting. FPU comes into this week's contest with three-consecutive losses and has dropped five of the last six overall. Their only win in recent weeks was a 78-72 victory over Academy of Art just before January turned to February. FPU was in it until the end against Azusa Pacific in their last game, coming up just one point short against the Cougars. The Sunbirds got a combined 38 points from Adrian Antunez and Aamondae Coleman to hang with an APU team that should be postseason bound. That duo combined for exactly 38 points in their loss to Biola earlier this year, too.

IN MEMORIAM: Biola Assistant Coach, UCLA Hall of Famer and Cypress College legend
Don Johnson passed away this past week at the age of 88. Johnson played for John Wooden at UCLA in the early 1950s and then went on to coach at Cypress from 1966-94, becoming the winningest coach in California Community College men's basketball history (588-259). The college dedicated the court in his honor in 2009, naming it "
Don Johnson Court." Johnson coached
Dr. Dave Holmquist at Cypress and the two remained lifelong friends in the decades since, with Johnson serving as an assistant at Biola for the last 21 years. Johnson is survived by his wife of 68 years, Colette, and their three children. SERIES SWEEP: Biola Men's Basketball has an opportunity to achieve its third two-game season series sweep in the PacWest era this week. A win over FPU would help BU to 2-0 against the Sunbirds this year. The only other times Biola's managed a 2-0 season record against a PacWest foe has been Holy Names in 2017-18 and Notre Dame de Namur earlier this year. Later this year, Biola also has a chance to complete 2-0 years against Hawaii Hilo (2/19), Hawaii Pacific (2/23), Dominican (2/28) and Academy of Art (3/2). If BU can complete the sweeps of all six opponents it would be a true testament to the growth of this team that won just five total PacWest games last year.
YEAR 39: Dr. Dave Holmquist just keeps humming along. He's in his 39th season coaching his alma mater and is holding steady in fifth place in the all-time wins list among four-year college men's basketball coaches. Holmquist's 970 wins are third-most among active college coaches, only falling behind Mike Krzyzewski of Duke (1,100) and Herb Magee of NCAA Division II Jefferson University (1,074). Holmquist has averaged 22.8 wins-per-season, including his three years at Fresno Pacific when he first got started in the mid-1970s. This year he's on pace to help the Eagles get 16 (16-14) and end with 974.
MR. 1,400?: Trevor Treinen eclipsed 1,000 career points in his last game last season. The four-year senior comes into this week up to 1,300 points after a productive preseason and strong first half of conference play. He's averaged 334 points-per-season over his last three years, with a career-best 442 points last year. If he can get around 375 this season, he could move into the top-10 all-time among Biola Men's Basketball players. He's currently on pace for around 398 points this season. The current No. 10 is Bryan Weakley (1998-02) at 1,322. The highest spot he could likely reach would be seventh. He'd need 417 points to pass Roger Poppen (1960-63) for that spot. Treinen has upped his points-per-game over the past month or so and is now close to his career-high in single-season scoring average, which came last year. He's averaging 14.2ppg this season and had 15.8ppg a year ago, Treinen is also near the top of the Biola record books in three-pointers made. He comes into this season with 148 through his first three seasons, eighth all-time. He's within 50 of passing Marcus White, Dakari Archer, Nate Rakestraw, Pierre Zook and Doug Newby to move into third all-time behind Weakley (236) and Danny Campbell (203). He's got just six made three-pointers over his last eight contests.
