Statement Win In San Rafael

Biola Women’s Basketball catches fire from beyond the arc and dominates an ice-cold Dominican, 84-53.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball delivered what may have been the biggest upset in the PacWest so far into the young 2019-20 season on Saturday. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's team caught fire from beyond the arc and came within two points of the program's NCAA-Era record for most points in a game as Biola steamrolled the Penguins, 84-53.

The Eagles drained 17 of their 31 three-point attempts, including a 9-for-15 clip in the first half, while the tandem of Tatum Brimley and Stephanie Lee almost outscored the home team all by themselves in the first 20 minutes to build up the huge lead for Biola.

Biola posted 21 points or more in each of the first three quarters and outscored the Penguins 26-to-6 in the third quarter to improved to 6-2, 2-0 PacWest. The Eagles have already set a new NCAA-Era program record with six-straight wins and tied the marks for consecutive road wins and three-pointers in a game with Saturday's blowout victory.

Nakamura's group held the Penguins' leading scorer, Jerusha Paine, to just seven points in the contest after she averaged about 24 coming into the week. And the Eagles literally carried a 40-point lead going into the final quarter after Biola dominated play coming out of halftime with that plus-20 point third period.

"This was a great team win," said the senior Brimley. "Everyone came in and contributed their part, our defense and offense and came together just like we planned. We have a bright future if we keep building on our momentum and stay hungry and humble."

All 10 women who appeared in the game for Biola played at least 11 minutes in the victory and had multiple rebounds. Seven different women also made a three-point shot.

The combo of Jazz Benn and Aysioa Johnson got the Eagles ahead early with eight and six points, respectively, as both women made two three pointers in the first 10 minutes. Then Brimley got the Penguins inside for seven points in the second quarter while Lee punished them from beyond the arc for 12 points to give the Eagles a 46-26 lead going into halftime.

Brimley set new season highs for field goals made (five) and points (13) to go along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

And Lee had a breakout game herself with a game-high 21 points on six makes from beyond the arc and three free throws. The freshman guard started the game 6-for-6 from three-point range and raised her scoring average by a full point and a half as she set a new personal best.

Speaking of Lee's three makes from the charity stripe, the Eagles made all seven of their free throw attempts on the evening to further cement the feeling that they just couldn't miss on Saturday.

Five women scored in double figures, including Kayla Macedo who combined with Lee for 31 of Biola's 40 points off the bench. Mikayla Greens led the team with nine boards.

The Eagles will look to harness the momentum of this big win and the six-game winning streak as they had back home to La Mirada. Biola hosts Hawaii Hilo in Chase Gym on December 10 at 5:30 p.m.
