Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Brandon Taylor, Assistant Sports Information Director

Another Record-Setting Night

Biola Women’s Basketball set a new NCAA-Era program record by holding Hawaii Hilo to 34 points in its seventh-straight win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After matching their NCAA-Era record for three pointers in a game on Saturday, the Biola Eagles just kept rolling to its seventh-straight win and another new mark for the program in Tuesday's matchup with University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group held the Vulcans under 10 points in three of the four quarters during Tuesday's 61-34 win for Biola. The 34 points allowed is the fewest the Eagles have allowed in a game since Biola joined the NCAA and came as a result of Biola's grit and determination that also force the Vulcans into 19 turnovers, multiple shot clock violations and a backcourt 10-second violation.

"This game was a great team win," said senior guard Jelissa Puckett. "Hawaii Hilo is a tough team to play against and when we lost focus a bit in the second quarter, the game got close. But we executed our schemes and turned our defense into the key for us. I love this team and like I always tell them, they are like my sisters!"

Puckett was one of the four members of the starting five that scored in double figures. Junior Jazz Benn also scored seven points, but took on more of a facilitator role in the offense and tied Tatum Brimley for the team lead in assists with four.

That trio were at the center of the Eagles' scoring outburst in the second quarter that honestly put the game away pretty early. After taking a 13-4 lead after 10 minutes, BU shot 8-for-12 from the field in the second quarter and was a perfect 6-for-6 from beyond the arc. As a result, Brimley, Danita Estorga and Aysia Johnson all posted eight or more first-half points while their team took a 35-16 lead into halftime.

Brimley was particularly efficient from the field against the team she set her career scoring high against last season. The senior guard scored in double figures for the second-straight game by shooting 5-of-8 from the field, including 4-for-4 during the first 20 minutes, and also recorded two steals. Backcourt buddies Puckett and Johnson each scored in double digits for the second time this season and got the Eagles out in transition time and again to capitalize on the Vulcans' mistakes.

Biola scored 16 fastbreak points and 29 points off turnovers compared to Hawaii Hilo's 11 points off turnovers. The Eagles also limited the Vulcans to eight points in the paint to improve to 3-0 in PacWest play and 7-2 overall.

Biola Women's Basketball will see how Hawaii Hilo fares against Point Loma on Thursday before heading to San Diego itself on Saturday. Tipoff in Golden Gym between the Eagles and Vulcans is scheduled for 2 p.m.
