Win Streak Lives On Grit

Biola Women’s Basketball pushes its winning streak to five games with a clutch fourth quarter against Notre Dame de Namur.

BELMONT, Calif. --- It was helpful that many of the leading contributors in Thursday's win had been in this situation before.

The Eagles found themselves in a close, low-scoring struggle at Notre Dame de Namur for the second year in a row and were able to pull out their fifth-straight win thanks to a gritty fourth quarter that gave Biola the margin it needed to start PacWest play 1-0. Senior Mikayla Greens delivered a big block and layup in the final minute to put her team in the driver's seat for good with a 46-41 lead that turned into a 51-44 victory.

"Notre Dame de Namur is a very disciplined, well-coached, gritty team. You have to play hard, smart, and together to compete with them," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "I am proud of the way Kayla Macedo, Haley Gantt, and Jordan Rabe came in to help us to hang in there in the first half. And I am thankful for how we played with poise and good competitive spirit in the second half to come back and close out a very tough game."

After winning 45-42 in Walter Gleason Gym a year ago, the Eagles spent the majority of the game within three to five points of the home team and went into the halftime break with just 18 points. But the defense stepped up to force 12 turnovers from the Argos and held them to 33 percent shooting over the first half to keep the score at 23-18.

Led by Gantt's team-best five points over the first 20 minutes, the Eagles scored 10 points off the bench in the first half and matched Notre Dame de Namur with six points in the paint. Biola went onto score 18 bench points compared to the Argos' three because of the eight additional points scored by Greens and Stephanie Lee in that crucial fourth quarter.

The Eagles scored a game-high 18 points in the final period with Greens and Jazz Benn finding openings for layups. Biola also scored 10 points in the paint during the fourth quarter and got another clutch jumper from Tatum Brimley with two minutes left that put the Argos in desperation mode down by six points.

Nakamura's group closed well by sinking their final five free throws to keep Notre Dame de Namur at bay. When it was all said and done, Danita Estorga and Benn led the Eagles with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Greens scored all seven of her points in the final 10 minutes to finish as Biola's third leading scorer.

The Eagels will play the second game of their road trip on Saturday when they travel to San Rafael to take on Dominican. Tipoff in the Conlan Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
