All's Wright At The End

Biola rides Alex Wright's career night to a come-from-behind win.

December 05, 2019

Box Score BELMONT, Calif. --- Season-high point outputs from Alex Wright, Marquise Mosley and Jesse Elrod power Biola Men's Basketball to a second-half comeback win over Notre Dame de Namur to win the team's PacWest Conference season-opener. The Eagles outscored the Argos 49-38 in the second half to win 88-79 on the road.

After a quick start saw Biola get out to an 8-2 lead in the first half, things slowed down in a major, major way for the Eagles throughout the first half. Wright was seemingly the only one hitting buckets through the middle 16 minutes of the opening frame as Biola saw NDNU shoot 10 percent better in the first half.

Besides Wright's 14 points, rebounding was the only thing keeping the Eagles close in the first half. Biola out-rebounded the Argos 22 to 11 in the first 20 minutes to have the game at just 41-39 at the break. Not too bad considering Biola had more than double the number of turnovers and NDNU was shooting almost 60 percent.

There was one primary reason for NDNU's scoring in the first half, Cameron Fisher. Biola came into the game concerned, with good reason, about the Argos' top scorer Trevor Thompson, who was the reigning PacWest Conference Player of the Week. But Thompson had zero first-half points, while Fisher went bonkers for 24 points off 9-of-10 shooting in the first 20 minutes.

Biola's defense held Fisher to just eight points in the second half, which is a major reason the team was able to flip the script in the game.

The Eagles took their first lead in the half at 54-52 when there was just about 14 minutes left on the clock. The lead quickly disappeared when NDNU made back-to-back threes to move back ahead at 58-54.

That was the story frequently until late in the second half. Biola continually tied or took a narrow lead only to see NDNU answer right back. Because of this the Argos ended up leading for over 25 of the game's 40 minutes on Thursday night.

Biola rode a 5-0 run to tie the game at 66 points with just under seven minutes left and then was the first team to break back out after a scoreless stretch of two minutes, taking a 73-68 lead by the time the game moved inside its final four minutes.

Five points from Wright keyed that 12-2 run that changed the entire tide of the contest as NDNU never again got closer than four points. Another very cold stretch for the Argos saw the lead balloon to as much as 12 points for BU.

Mosley made seven of his eight free-throw chances in the final 3:42 to really aid Biola in keeping its opponent at an arm's length. That was especially helpful in the final minute of play when the two sides combined for eight fouls.

It was another tough shooting night for Mosley, but he continued to prove just how valuable he is elsewhere. His ability to draw fouls allowed him to score 11 of his 24 points from the free-throw line. He was lockdown on defense late and he also had a season-high seven assists to help facilitate the Biola offense which kept right above its season-average for scoring margin at +9.

Wright made nine of his 13 attempts to pile on a career-high 28 points and also ended up leading the team with nine rebounds, which is just one off his career-best. He also had four assists, played all 40 minutes and showed tremendous leadership on the floor in times where Biola had to deal with a handful of tough calls not going its way.

Jesse Elrod (14) and Solomon Ruddell (11) also topped double-digits for the Eagles. Ruddell continued his impressive run of scoring efficiently with a 5-for-5 performance in 25 minutes.

Biola ended up out-rebounding the hosts 40-27 and ultimately finished the game with a higher shooting percentage than the Argos thanks to good shot selection in the second half.

Biola turned the ball over 14 times, which is concerning as its the sixth time in seven outings this year with double-digit turnovers. Despite turning the ball over five more times than the opponent, the Eagles did a better job neutralizing the damage, actually allowing fewer points off turnovers than they scored themselves.

All the same, it's now five wins in a row for the Eagles and the team gets its first PacWest Conference win out of the way early for the second-straight year. Biola improves to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in PacWest play.

The Eagles will travel nearby in the Bay Area to Dominican (0-7; 0-1 PacWest) for a Saturday night game. Dominican may be winless, but they pushed defending conference champions Point Loma to the brink tonight in an 80-71 contest.
