Guards Lock It Down

Led by Tatum Brimley’s 21 points and 55 total points from guards, Biola Women’s Basketball defeats Fresno Pacific.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The student body may have left for Christmas break the day before, but Chase Gym was loud and electric during Biola's exciting conference matchup on Saturday against Fresno Pacific.

Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group held off a charging Sunbirds group that tried to run and push its way back to an even score. But overall team grit at both ends of the floor and great guard play in both halves carried the Eagles to a 77-73 victory.

Senior Tatum Brimley came within one point of her career high with 21 points that lead the Eagles in scoring and helped Biola get its eighth win of the season. Brimley and the Eagles will be in third place in the PacWest going into their Hawaii trip at 4-1 in conference while Fresno Pacific drops to 5-5, 3-2 PacWest.

"Today's game was the definition of competition," said Coach Nakamura. "We got off to a pretty good start. but Fresno Pacific is one of the best-coached, most determined teams we will face this season. They made us earn everything and this game was a struggle until the final horn.

"I was excited to see how our team stuck together through every challenge, competed for every rebound and loose ball and made clutch free throws down the stretch to close out the game. I'm especially excited for the seniors: Jelissa, Kayla, Mikayla and Tatum. They are doing an excellent job leading our team!"

The difference in this game ended up being Biola's ability to get stops around the perimeter in the first half. Both teams found an offensive flow in the second half to combine for 100 points over the final 20 minutes. But the Eagles held Fresno Pacific to just seven field goals in the first half and a 0-for-8 mark from three-point range over the first two quarters, causing Biola to take a 31-19 lead into halftime.

Biola's perimeter defenders didn't surrender a three-pointer until four minutes into the second half and turned a bunch of steals on defense into offense with 24 points off of turnovers. Paced by Brimely's 21 and Stephanie Lee's 14 points off the bench, the Eagles' guards scored 55 points in the contest and carried the Eagles to 21-for-25 shooting from the charity stripe.

Brimley, in particular, punished the Sunbirds for allowing her to slice into the key. The senior went to the line seven times and made eight of her 13 second-half points on 10 fourth-quarter free-throw attempts.

Brimley also scored her 21 points in just 20 minutes of action, nine of which came in the second half, to reach double figures for the fourth-straight game.

The other key to victory was Biola's dominance in the paint. The Eagles scored 10 points from the key in each of the first three quarters while forwards Jazz Benn, Danita Estorga and Mikayla Greens (seven points) combined for 22 rebounds. Point guard Jelissa Puckett also pulled down seven boards of her own while Aysia Johnson contributed 10 points for the second time in the past three contests.

Saturday's win was Biola's last game of the 2019 calendar year. The Eagles fly to Hawaii on New Year's Day to start their three-game road trip at Hawaii Pacific on January 2.
