Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Brandon Taylor, Assistant Sports Information Director

Down To The Wire

Biola Women’s Basketball never trailed by more than five points and was a field goal away from victory in the final minute.

SAN DIEGO --- The Biola Eagles stepped into the road-warrior persona for the third game in a row on Saturday and took command of their game with Point Loma from the very start.

After retaking the lead at 16-15 in the first quarter, Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group never trailed until midway through the fourth period and scored 18 or 19 points in each of the first three quarters. But the Eagles just could not come up with the field goals this time to hold off their opponent's surge and Biola lost its first road game by a score of 68-63.

Despite the loss, the Eagles should be pretty satisfied with the work they did to keep themselves in a position to win right until the very end. Biola's defense limited the home team to 30 percent shooting over the first half and built an 11-point lead midway through the second quarter.

Danita Estorga did the early pushing to create her team's momentum with 5-for-7 shooting in the first half (14 points). And the Eagles responded by having six other women score points in the first half to carry a 37-33 lead into halftime. Biola played well enough to lead by double-figures headed into the break. But the Sea Lions did what they could to get to the free-throw line when their shots were not falling and made 11 of their 12 free throw attempts in the first 20 minutes.

They would continue to add points from the charity stripe throughout the second half and made four-straight free throws in the final minute to complete their comeback.

The Eagles still showed a lot of grit in the final quarter to make things as tough as possible on Point Loma. Mikayla Greens opened the quarter with a layup on the way to 13 points off the bench and made the score 58-55 in Biola's favor.

Aysia Johnson made a layup of her own to push the lead back to three with five and a half minutes left. And Tatum Brimley made a game-tying jumper with 2:31 left before stealing the ball with 32 seconds left and down by one point.

Brimley's ability to deliver in the clutch scored the last three points of the game for Biola and pushed her to 10 points for the game on 4-for-7 shooting. But the Sea Lions defenders sprinted back to the basket to cut Brimley off from an open layup attempt after the steal and were just barely able to get the defensive rebound to force the Eagles into intentional-foul mode.

Biola still finds itself in the top-four of the PacWest standings after the loss because Azusa Pacific also suffered a loss to Fresno Pacific on Saturday. The Sunbirds will head to Chase Gym for a matchup with Biola on Saturday December 21 after Biola's Finals Week.
