Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Comeback Goes Cold

Biola goes on a 24-4 run in the second-half, but it misses all shots in final two minutes.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- A slow start to the first half killed Biola Men's Basketball on Saturday night, as the Eagles struggled to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit despite a strong second period.

Biola was playing the hosts of their CCAA-PacWest Crossover, CSU Los Angeles. The Golden Eagles scored 39 in each half to dismiss Biola 78-69 and set Dr. Dave Holmquist's team down to 0-2 to begin the 2019-20 season.

Michael Bagatourian was the one thing that was working out for Biola in the early going. He had a strong first 10 minutes, making three of his first four shots to score eight of the Eagles' first 10 points.

But, he was subbed out at the 12-minute mark and CSULA began to build a little lead, having it up to 22-14 by the time Bagatourian came back in.

The three-pointer was the weapon of choice for CSULA through most of the evening. The Golden Eagles managed 14 threes throughout the night, including eight in the first half, accounting for more than half of their first-half points.

Conversely, Biola struggled from deep once again. Aside from early success from Bagatourian (2-for-2 in first half), Biola went just 4-of-17 from deep. The toughest part was a 2-for-11 showing from distance in the second half that kept the Eagles' comeback at bay just a bit.

Marquise Mosley had another monster second half for the Eagles. He had 15 points over the final 20 minutes, including drawing enough fouls to go 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. Mosley would end up with 22 points for the second-straight night to lead BU. Bagatourian's 19 was second and Jesse Elrod also chalked up double-digits (12) to help the cause.

CSULA got off to a strong start to the second half, extending their lead to as many as 21 early (63-42 at 10:52), but Biola showed some incredible resolve in the final 10 minutes to get the game back really, really close.

BU went on a remarkable 24-4 run from 10:52 to 4:11 to cut the Golden Eagles' lead to just one single point (67-66) following a transition bucket by Mosley after a steal from Bagatourian. Sixteen of those 24 points came from Mosley and Bagatourian, with Elrod, Chris Rossow and Whitten Dominguez also chipping in.

After a brief burst from CSULA a Rossow three brought it back within three for the Eagles with just over two minutes to play. But, after that made three with two minutes and 17 seconds left Biola was held scoreless by the CSULA defense, going 0-for-8 from the floor over those final 137 ticks of the clock.

Meanwhile, CSULA scored on its only two field goal attempts during the same span to hold on for the nine-point win.

The Golden Eagles saw a significant contribution from their bench, with non-starters accounting for 22 of the team's 78 points. Fard Muhammad (11) and CJ Fisher (7) led that effort. Biola got just nine points from its bench on Saturday.

Biola did play very disciplined on defense all night despite the losing effort. The Eagles only committed 12 fouls and gave CSULA just 10 chances at the line. Perhaps BU should've fouled a bit more though, because the hosts only made four of their 10 free throw attempts.

Both teams were similar in numbers in every other category, it was just the Eagles' inability to keep up beyond the three-point line that made the difference down the stretch. Bagatourian was the only one with consistent success from deep, going 3-for-5.

Biola has all week off from competition next week before entering into the less challenging portion of their preseason schedule beginning with a November 19 meeting against La Sierra at Chase Gym.
