LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Steve Herve is a basketball alumnus, now coaching the men's team at Biola. Marquise Mosley is a transfer from California Baptist University playing his last year of eligibility on the Biola Men's Basketball team. At first glance, other than basketball, these two might not seem to have that much in common. What most people don't know, however, is that these two are brothers ... but not by blood. 

Their story starts before college when Steve came from Cameroon to attend high school and play basketball in the United States. Steve's cousin had a connection with the Mosley family and asked if the Mosley's would be willing to be Herve's host family during his time in the states. The Mosley's said yes and welcomed Steve into their home in 2012. 

This transition was an exciting time for both parties, but it did not come without its challenges. Steve's transition to America was rather difficult because he didn't know English well. Not only did he not know the language, but he was coming into an entirely different culture and the Mosleys' were complete strangers to him at the time. 

Reflecting on that period in his life, Herve said it was one of those times where you "put your head down and you go. You just do it." 

"Before I came, I knew I was staying with Marquise's family because we had done the paperwork, but at the same time I didn't really know who I was staying with," said Herve. "However, I got to know them and I knew right away that they were great people. I got more comfortable and more excited to get to know them."

Eventually, Steve got through this transition period and is so thankful to the Mosley's for being beside him through it all. With time, the Mosley's became like family to him, and Marquise and Steve's relationship grew stronger and stronger. 



Marquise has two younger brothers and has always wished that he could play basketball on the same team as them, but since they are so much younger than him he never got to fulfill this dream. That is, at least not until Steve came along. Finally, Marquise was able to play basketball on the same team with one of his "brothers." They had the opportunity to play together for two years in high school. Marquise says that during this time he "never took a game for granted." 

If you are ever in a room with these two, you will instantly see the connection between them. This connection was forged by playing basketball and just by living life together. They said much of their bonding came from being able to spend time together at home. Whether that be joking around or just hanging out; it was that shared time at home that was so crucial in growing their relationship to what it is today.

Steve and Marquise went separate ways when Steve came to college at Biola and Marquise decided to play at CBU. Now with Marquise at Biola, they're once again on the same team.

"I came here on a visit and I just felt really comfortable. I could be who I wanted to be. The atmosphere and the people really drew me to Biola," said Mosley.

Now they are technically on the same team, but it is a whole different dynamic than what they're used to. This is because instead of them both being players on the same team Steve is one of Marquise's coaches. This has been an adjustment for both of them, but they both describe it as "simply being different." 

Marquise respects Steve as a coach, and Steve knows how to coach Marquise because he understands how he plays. They are both excited to be on the same team again, even if it is a whole new dynamic. 

As this basketball season begins they are looking forward to what's to come. Both Marquise and Steve say there is something special about playing on a team with your brother. It is comforting to play on a team where you know someone has your back no matter what. 

These two may not be genetically related, but it is clear that they are family. In Marquise's words, "the only thing that separates us is blood."

Biola Men's Basketball begins its 2019-20 season this Friday against CSU San Marcos at CSU Los Angeles. Mosley figures to be the team's starting point guard, with Steve one of four former Eagles coaching on the bench.
