Puckett’s Buckets Lead Biola

Senior Jelissa Puckett scores a career-high 16 points on perfect shooting to lead Biola to a win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.

CARSON, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball exacted some revenge against Cal State Dominguez Hills while pushing its winning streak to four on Saturday afternoon.

After going into the halftime break down 40-31, Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group took the lead going into the final period and had its best scoring quarter of the day (24 points) to wrap up the game on the way to a 75-64 win over the Toros.

The victory reverses a four-game losing streak to Cal State Dominguez Hills for Biola Women's Basketball and gives the Eagles a nice winning streak, and their second-straight road win, headed into the beginning of PacWest play at Notre Dame de Namur on December 5.

The Toros, who came into the game with a strong correlation between good three-point shooting and winning basketball, got off to a hot start in the first quarter with 23 points and four makes from beyond the arc. Guard Jasmine Phoolka outscored Biola all by herself over the first 10 minutes with 14 points and perfect shooting on three attempts from three.

But Cal State Dominguez Hills' shooting from three stalled out the rest of the game, going 2-for-12 over the final 30 minutes while Biola started to climb back into the contest by outscoring the home team 19-to-17 in the second quarter. Kayla Macedo and Danita Estorga tied for the team lead in first-half points with six. Estorga also picked up six first-half rebounds and finished with double-digit points for the sixth-straight game this season.

Coming out of the halftime break, senior guard Jelissa Puckett raced out the gate with five of her team's first seven points to bring the Eagles within four points. The Eagles tied the game at 44-44 with 4:42 left in the third after starting the half down by nine as eight different women chipped in points during the quarter. But Puckett kept her hot hand and drained every shot she took from the field and the free throw line to score a team-best 11 points in the second half.

She also led the team in rebounds (4) and steals (2) over the third and fourth quarters.

The senior finished with a career-high 16 points to pace her team, eclipsing her previous high with Biola of 11 points that she also recorded against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Jazz Benn followed closely behind with eight second-half points and the Eagles went 15-for-18 from the charity stripe as a team after the break in their push to take the lead.

"This game was a good challenge for us. Cal State Dominguez Hills is as physical and well-coached as any team we will face this season," said Coach Nakamura. "They got off to a hot start, but we hung in there, kept playing hard on the defensive end, and finally hit some shots. Our team is good at coming back because they sincerely care about each other and stick together through all situations."

Biola concluded the game on a 17-to-5 run over the final four and a half minutes to create its comfortable margin of victory and seven women scored at least seven points for the Eagles. Nakamura's group also dominated the fastbreak points category, outscoring the Toros 24-to-0 in that metric.

The Eagles will start PacWest play against the Notre Dame de Namur Argos on December 5 at 5:30 p.m. They'll play the Dominican Penguins at the same time two days later in San Rafael.
