Eagles Power Past Royals

Biola Women’s Basketball beats Hope International 78-60 behind six double figure scorers and a big rebound margin.

FULLERTON, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball wasn't intimidated in the slightest by a 6-0 team that was averaging almost 90 points per game. Going into Darling Pavilion to play Hope International on its own floor, Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group was gritty on the boards from the start Saturday and pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Royals 78-60.

The Eagles had six double-figures scorers in the victory and limited the Royals to just five rebounds in the first half on the way to a 3-2 record.

Danita Estorga led the team in scoring for the fifth time this season with 14 points. But it was a team-wide scoring effort in the third and fourth quarter that was really the difference for Biola: Mikayla Greens was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field in the second half to collect all 12 of her points while Jazz Benn added five points and six rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Biola ran out the gates quick, taking a 25-14 lead after the first quarter because the Eagles dished out nine assists on their 11 makes. The rebounding picked up in the second quarter with 13 boards for the visiting team, compared to just four for the Royals, and Biola rode 22 points in the paint during the first half to a 41-28 lead going into the break.

Hope International adjusted well coming out of halftime and closed the gap to 51-49 headed into the final 10 minutes. But the Eagles responded with their best scoring quarter of the afternoon, collecting 27 points while limiting the Royals to 11 on 4-of-13 shooting during the period.

The Eagles bench scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, with Greens and Stephanie Lee chipping in eight apiece. Lee also picked up one of Biola's five steals during the period to push the team to 10 points off turnovers to close out the game.

The freshman guard scored in double digits for the second time this year and was also joined in the double-figure club by Aysia Johnson and Tatum Brimley.

"Tonight's game was a good challenge for our team, Hope International really plays with a lot of energy and toughness," said Coach Nakamura. "I am excited about how our team really stuck together through the thick and thin of the game; adversity caused our to draw even closer. The player ownership and unity really helped us to overcome the deficit and make a run at the end."

Biola finished the game shooting 53 percent from the field, far and away the best shooting percentage of the year for the team, in addition to recording a season-high 21 assists.

Nakamura's group will carry a three-game winning streak into Thanksgiving Day before heading to Carson on Saturday November 30 for a rematch with Cal State Dominguez Hills at 1 p.m.
