Game Recap: Volleyball |

29 Down, One To Go

Biola got a solid sweep of Dominican as it heads into Senior Day Saturday.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- As anticipated Biola Volleyball took care of the Dominican Penguins in three sets (25-10; 25-15; 25-21) at home on Friday night. The Eagles shone bright on the eve of their 2019 senior day, only once feeling pressure in a set.

The third set was the closest, with the two teams neck-and-neck even past the 20-point mark. The Penguins had a solid stretch of attacking that helped them score four of five points to tie the match at 20. Unfortunately for the Penguins, they managed just one rally win past that point with Biola taking advantage of a trio of mishits by Dominican, a kill from Sabrina Winslow and finally a block by Raegan Tjepkema and Bekah Roth to close out the match.

The Eagles had six blocks on the night, with Copeland, Roth and Tjepkema each ending with three a piece. The attack is where most of the damage was done though, with the Eagles compiling 14 kills in set one, 18 kills in set two and 16 kills in the closing game.

Winslow had 12 kills to lead the team, while Tjepkema loaded up 11 kills to finish second on the team. Winslow's effort tonight allowed her to retake the team-lead in kills with 265 to Roth's 264. Tjepkema is third now with 237 headed into the season's final day.

The kills tonight brought Winslow up to 985 career kills (including her time at Fresno State). She has an outside chance to hit the 1,000 mark on her senior day Saturday.

Biola started out 11-3 in set one and 15-7 in set two to build large leads and decrease the drama in each of the first two. The leads were so much that Dominican's head coach didn't even bother to call all her timeouts.

The Eagles hit .294 for the match, committing just 11 attack errors, which is the third-lowest total of the year. Winslow's .440 mark (12 - 1 - 25) led the way and was also a season-best for her.

The loudest kill of the night was definitely when senior defensive specialist Kaitlin O'Brien landed one from the back row, with her whole family visiting for her special weekend. That kill made it 18-13 in the second set and started a run of six points in a row for BU.

O'Brien's running mate Sami Hover led the defense with an incredible 26 digs in just three sets (8.7/set). She'll go into the last match of the year needing just four more to reach 600 for the season and five more to hit 1,600 in her career.

Vanessa Garcia and Abby Brewster co-led the setting effort with 19 kills each. Garcia was a stud from the service line on Friday leading all players with three aces. She's up to 25 on the year, which is second only to Tjepkema.

Biola, now 16-13 overall and 13-8 in PacWest Conference play ends its season at home on Saturday with a 3 p.m. match against Notre Dame de Namur (4-24; 3-17 PacWest).
