Four Eagles Earn All-PacWest

Biola Men’s Soccer sees three seniors and goalkeeper JD Gunn earn All-PacWest Recognition.

November 20, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Four members of the Biola Men's Soccer starting XI were selected to All-PacWest teams on Wednesday. Seniors Jake Munivez and Leo Thompson and goalkeeper JD Gunn landed on the All-PacWest second team and defender Hunter Finnegan represented the Eagles on the third team.

This is the second-consecutive All-PacWest selection for Munivez and Thompson and the first year-end award for both Finnegan and Gunn.

The senior centerback and captain Jake Munivez moved up a level after appearing on the All-PacWest Third Team in 2018. Munivez started every match at centerback again for Biola this year and played more minutes (1,702). He was one of just two PacWest men's soccer players to be selected to 2019 Academic All-District Team and helped lead the Eagles to their six shutouts this year.

Munivez was a regular target on free kick and corner kick opportunities for the Eagles, resulting in eight shots and one on-goal this year. And His 6'3" frame made him a defensive wall in the penalty area for Biola, an asset he leveraged alongside his tactical IQ that helped him cut off attackers before they ran past him.

Thompson, also an All-Pacwest Second Team selection in 2018,  still managed to lead the Eagles in goals (5) and points (13) in 2019 despite dealing with injuries. He led the Eagles in shots (37) and shots on goal (20) while serving as the main facilitator of the attack and the main outlet upfield. And he provided key breakthroughs when Biola needed something from him: Thompson scored a goal in every-other match from September 14 to October 19 and provided two assists in Biola's 4-3 comeback victory over Point Loma on November 13.

The Englishman concludes his Biola career with 16 goals in 28 starts as the Eagles won 16 matches with him at the top of the attack.

JD Gunn may have been the biggest bright-spot for the Eagles in a 2019 season that saw regular contributions for multiple freshmen. The goalkeeper earned PacWest Freshman of the Week honors on September 9 and October 21, posting six shutouts with 73 saves across 17 starts to land on the All-PacWest Second Team.

Gunn posted wins against four of the top five teams in the conference table, allowing 1.25 goals during those matches with two shutouts. And he was tied for best goals against average (1.228) among PacWest goalies who played over half of the conference schedule.

Finally, the senior Hunter Finnegan earned his first all-conference honor after serving as Biola's biggest playmaker this season: using his speed off the backline, long throw-ins into the box and contagious energy to make an impact on matches. Finnegan played every minute of his final 14 matches of the season and was top-five in the PacWest with five assists this season. Biola was 3-0-1 against conference opponents when he scored on assisted on a goal and he ended up second on the team with nine points.

Biola Men's Soccer finished with a record at .500 or above for the ninth-straight season in 2019. The team will return to Al Barbour Field for spring practices in the new calendar year.
